I pay >$100 for @screenstudio even though there are probably free OSS tools that are functionally equivalent
Screen Studio on X
Praise still leads, with transcript editing the recent highlight and people naming it as their pick for demo videos. Around that, talk has turned on price and reliability: a buggy update, the pulled lifetime licence, and free clones people rebuild or switch to.

How do people feel about Screen Studio?
Most of the talk is praise: 49 of 66 people here name it as their pick for recording demos, and the new transcript editing is what they single out. 8 like it while griping about a part of it, 6 say it has gone downhill, and 3 credit the team.
Praise usually arrives as a bare answer: asked what to record a demo with, people reply with the product's name and nothing else. When they say why, it is the look of the result — a clean 15-second demo, zoom animation, the loupe — and transcript editing, which one user calls "sooo good" and says pays for itself by the first video. One pays more than $100 while allowing that free tools do the same job.
The 8 people who like it and gripe pick at parts rather than the whole: an annual plan cancelled although the editing is "the best", missing device frames for a new iPhone, caption text size, an unsure reaction to the new click ripple. 6 say it has gone downhill — buggier and more frustrating, long exports, moving to Cap or Shotbase.
3 credit the team: a renewal for another year, and a fix shipped after someone contacted support.

@pie6k overdid himself with the new version of @screenstudio Transcript based editing is sooo good! The license pays for itself by the first video.
screen studio is the one i'd keep if i could only pick one....a clean 15s demo does more than any thread i've written
Looks good. BTW Screen Studio is my best discovery of the year.
I love @screenstudio but it doesn't have iPhone 18 device frames yet so the notch looked super weird on my screen recordings. I asked Claude to remove the hardcoded notch from their bundled assets and it just... Did it (and re-signed the app so it still runs) lol. Fun times!!

What do people complain about with Screen Studio?
The latest big update is the top complaint, from 10 of 40 people in this section, then the subscription price (9), then missing features (7). The pulled lifetime license, failed exports and slow editing are level behind those at 4, 4 and 4.
The update complaints are about output and the app itself: a blank canvas on an Intel Mac, a wallpaper drawn over the video, two instances of the app opening, a mic that is no longer detected, presets that skip the cursor size, and a removed padding percentage. One user asks for a fix in the main release because the app "isn't usable for me with this issue".
Price is argued as value, not just cost: an annual plan cancelled because "it just doesn't make sense anymore", another user moved to CleanShotX, and people set the current monthly charge against the $40 one-time price they paid at launch.
Missing features are concrete: no full screen, no frames for a new iPhone, only one mask per range, a cursor glitch and a zoom that drops the split-screen setup. Lifetime buyers are the sorest: one reports a licence that expired and needed paying again to update. Exports fail outright and some restart the app to export at all, while others say setting zooms takes repeated takes.
- Latest update broke things11
- Subscription too expensive9
- Missing features and rough edges7
- Export failures6
- Lifetime license pulled5
- Editing is slow and tedious5

Hey @screenstudio and @pie6k, the latest update broke my recordings. The editor now shows a completely blank canvas, even for older files. I’m using an Intel Mac. Any idea how to fix this?
Screen Studio got greedy. I paid $40 one-time when it was launched. Now it's $29/m subscription and there are better alternatives now.
I cancelled my Screen Studio sub. I'm a power user, but honestly, there is no need to pay $108 for screen recording software anymore. Instead you can: > reverse engineer one of those recorders > use a free open source alternative > build a lightweight recorder yourself The movement towards self owned software is slowly gaining momentum 👀
I'm also a Screen Studio user. Unfortunately I also had to cancel my annual plan. It just doesn't make sense anymore, which is sad because I actually really like the product.

What are the alternatives to Screen Studio?
The loudest alternative is a free copy: 12 of 46 people here talk about rebuilding or reverse-engineering Screen Studio, and free clones OpenScreen (8) and agent-made demo videos (8) are level behind it. Recordly follows at 5.
Rebuilding is the one theme that is not simply another product. People point an agent at the app, write their own version, and report half-hour turnarounds; others push back that the copies look bad and carry one of a hundred features. The licence is the reason given: one cancelled their subscription and listed reverse engineering, a free alternative or a self-built recorder as substitutes.
OpenScreen is named most among the products, described as free and open-source with auto-zoom, captions and Windows and Linux support, and one launch post reaches far beyond its author. Recordly is named by people who cancel the subscription for it, some wanting to customise it themselves. Agent workflows are the other level theme: a storyboard plus an agent that builds the visuals takes a video from hours to under thirty minutes.
Loom comes up as the tool people left for it, often favourably, and Cap, OBS or a built-in recorder as cheaper options.
- Rebuilt or reverse-engineered by users13
- OpenScreen9
- Prompt-driven demo video with AI agents8
- Recordly6
- Loom4
- Cap3

Questions· 17 posts· written 27 Oct
What do people ask about Screen Studio?
Comparison shopping is the largest group, 5 of 17 people, and the free-alternative ask and how-to-fix questions are level behind it at 4 and 4. Both of the biggest turn on the monthly fee.
Comparison questions are usually asked before a purchase, against a named tool and with price in the frame: whether to renew or move to Cap, how a new recorder differs "vs screen studio" beyond pricing, and one person who tried Opus, Remotion, Jitter and Screen Studio side by side.
The free-alternative ask is about matching features without paying: a completely free app with automatic zoom, smooth cursor movement and built-in editing, or simply "any good screen studio alternative?". One asks while saying it is "too expensive".
How-do-I questions follow the update: where to fix a wallpaper over the video, how to get support when the new version stops working, and where the full camera view is. 2 ask about MCP or agent access, and one each ask for a Windows or Linux equivalent and for a changelog.
- How does it compare to X?5
- Is there a free alternative?4
- How do I fix or find this?4
- Is there an MCP or agent support?2
- Something similar for Windows or Linux?1
- Where is the changelog?1

Mac users, what app do you use for screen recording? Is it free or paid? Is there any completely free app with features like automatic zoom, smooth cursor movement, and built-in editing, similar to Screen Studio?
any good screen studio alternative?
Should I update my subscription or change to @cap? I was one of the first at @screenstudio and got the full price
been testing different ways to make a demo video. I tried: - Opus 5.5 - Remotion - GPT 6 Astra - Jitter - Screen Studio. Astra+ Remotion is the overall winner. balancing editability, speed and quality.

Wishes· 14 posts from 12 people· written 27 Oct
What do people want from Screen Studio?
The clearest ask is agent access: 3 of 12 people want MCP, a CLI or some way for an agent to record, adjust zooms and export. The rest are small asks: text on the video, clip editing, separate audio volume, or a Windows or open-source version.
The agent ask comes from subscribers and daily users who want the app to be a harness an agent can drive: record a window, return a project, then take instructions such as "redo the zoom at 1:30–2:20" and render it. One says plainly that if agents could use it, the product would be ideal. Another argues the time is now because people already drive the app over a debug port, and "an official version, even rough, beats users building their own".
Beyond that, the wishes are thin, each raised by one person or two. Text and annotations are wanted separately from captions, because captions are tied to the transcript. Others want to duplicate and overlay clips on a timeline, adjust microphone and system volume independently, add a larger preview, and see more branding work. One asks for the source code, having spent time and tokens adding features by reverse-engineering instead.
- MCP, CLI and agent control5
- Add text and notes to the video2
- Timeline and clip editing2
- Separate mic and system volume1
- A Windows version1
- Open source and cross-platform1

All three. My agents record QA runs with the browser's recorder, and it's flat. Ideal: CLI/MCP records a window → returns a project ID → I say "redo the zoom at 1:30–2:20" → agent edits, pulls frames to check, renders. Screen Studio as the agent's recording harness.
Only if agents could use Screen Studio in some way or form, it would be 10/10. I'm a screen studio subscriber, btw
Fair, but people are already hacking it: screenstudio-cli drives the app over a debug port so Claude/Codex can record, edit zooms, and export. Agents make switching cheap. An official version, even rough, beats users building their own.
This is money. If you are having interaction design issues and are tired of screenshots one by one this is the unlock. You need a screen recorder that can save animated .gif for this to work. I use @screenstudio - it is amazing. @screenstudio consider an MCP server for this
I wonder why adding text is still not a thing in Screenstudio. I get that the original thesis of SS was "simply record and share with minimal editing" but adding text can help with correcting errors in speech. Captions does not really cover it because it seems to be strongly tied to the transcript.

Agents build the demo video itself, not a copy of the app
People posted their new demo-video pipelines the same day: a storyboard plus an agent that builds the visuals takes a product video from hours in Screen Studio to under 30 minutes. Replies agree Screen Studio "takes forever" for this.

under 30 mins for product videos is nuts. screen studio takes forever tbh, gonna have to check this out
Shipping the editor you actually need instead of waiting on Screen Studio hits different. Cut pauses, swap STT, agent control — that's the real product brief.

Agents rebuild Screen Studio in half an hour
Accounts of pointing an agent at the app and having a working local copy written from its behaviour, one claiming a half-hour turnaround. Others answer that the copies look bad, carry one of a hundred features and leave you fixing bugs yourself.

link
牛皮! 直接用 Rea 来复刻录屏收费软件 Screen Studio 功能 强调下这是复刻, 不是破解

OpenScreen 2 arrives as the free replacement
Posts the same day pitched OpenScreen 2 as free and MIT-licensed, with click-driven zooms, cutting by deleting transcript words and agent access over MCP, one calling Screen Studio "the default tax on a good product demo".
See the 2 postsHide the posts
Screen Studio used to be the default tax on a good product demo. OpenScreen 2 is free and MIT. It plans zooms from your clicks, lets you cut by deleting words in the transcript, and can hand the edit to an agent over MCP. Windows, Mac and Linux. No account. No watermark.

The new version's bugs hit users
Same day, several users reported the new version misbehaving: a wallpaper drawn over the video, video quality that looked far lower, local exports failing while link export worked, and v4 recording only audio.
See the 4 postsHide the posts
Is it me or has @screenstudio video quality drastically reduced? Updated my license last night and quality is pretty low, even when exporting at highest settings..
Hey @pie6k .. updated to the latest version of @screenstudio and for some reason the wallpaper is shown over the video. How can I fix this?
link It is a local export issue. Export as link works.
Anyone else having trouble with @screenstudio v4 not recording your screen or camera, only audio and zoom ranges? I already contacted their team@ email address, but I'm worried this is an Intel problem.
