Cannot recommend @cap enough, really Free, open source, better than almost any paid software for video recording, screenshots, and editing Makes my life so much easier Thanks so much, @richiemcilroy
Cap on X
The largest group, 26 people, simply recommends Cap — free, open source, and now faster and lighter after the rewrite. Contributors do much of the talking, posting benchmark fixes for its slowness and asking whether their merged PRs earn the sponsorship.

How do people feel about Cap?
Praise dominates: 26 of the 43 people here say they love Cap, use it for demos or recommend it to others. Behind them, 7 people single out how fast and light the new version is, and the 4 who came away unhappy name specific failures.
Most praise is brief and practical: people answer "what should I use?" threads with Cap, say their whole team uses it, and post about recording demos with it. 5 people credit the free, open-source model, several as the reason to pick it over paid tools; one says it is "free and solid", and another that it "just WORKS" on Linux where the alternatives they tried did not.
7 people praise the rewritten version for speed, and several name the size drop from 3.7 GB to 440 MB once the embedded browser was gone — one calls that "the actual fix here". A contributor posting about a first merged contribution says it is cool to contribute to a product they actually use.
The unhappy 4 are specific rather than vague: audio and video out of sync on a Mac recording, white artifacts in the exported video, a five-minute limit on free recordings called too short, and one person who preferred the old interface. 2 people are undecided, including one who tried it on Windows, says it lagged the whole system, and might try again.

i'm loving the new version of @cap it's so fast now
@Cap is really amazing. It's open-source, which is cool. It also just WORKS, which is especially nice on Linux where so many of the alternatives I tried are trash. link
Or just use @cap, it's already free and open-source
3.7gb to 440mb just by not shipping an entire browser inside the app. incredible what that thing was doing in there

What do people complain about with Cap?
Performance is where most of the complaint talk is: 13 of the 21 people here, and much of it is contributors posting benchmark fixes rather than users giving up. 6 people report app and editor bugs, 3 recordings that come out wrong, and 2 rough Linux setup.
The slowness talk is unusually concrete. Contributors report imports decoding on a single CPU thread, GPU cores sitting idle during export, the cursor image re-hashed on every tick, and the editor rebuilding waveforms sixty times a second; fixes are posted with before-and-after numbers, such as export 104s → 18s, imports 62s → 33s at 1080p, and NVENC use going from 24% to 100%. A few users just say it was "janky" and they stopped, or that it lagged a whole Windows system. One asks whether rendering not loading all the cores is a bug.
The bugs 6 people name are specific: keyboard segments that turned ⌥⌘← into "⌘LOPTION", the timeline jumping back to 0:00 when a clip is added, no fullscreen preview while editing, a video stuck on "Loading video...", a transparent installer window on Windows, and a recording bar where close sits where pause should be.
3 people had audio and video out of sync, white artifacts on export, or imports landing a frame short. 2 on Linux describe configuring everything by hand because it is not compiled for Linux, and one says it "sometimes breaks".

I spent about a day contributing PRs to @cap • Export: 104s → 18s (5.8×) • Dev rebuild: 380s → 22s (17×) • Encode: 49 → 307 fps • Bundle: 98.3 → 91.1 MB (−7.3%) • Editor ready: −0.6s • Stale frames: 601 → 22 • NVENC: 24% → 100% • GPU SM: 24% → 53% • NVDEC: 14% → 45% • Shader build: 0.94s → 0.49s • Bugs fixed: 6
At the Solana Fall Class, @jacobvcreech said: don’t wait to be noticed. Share the work. So here is one recent work @cap offered to sponsor anyone who shipped a performance PR with benchmarks. I sent one, it got merged and got me my first GitHub sponsor. Here’s what the PR does: Importing a video into Cap was slow for two reasons: The decoder ran on one CPU thread (FFmpeg’s default) The encoder used a live-streaming mode that handles one frame at a time I fixed both. 1080p: 62s → 33s 4K: 82s → 43s Same output quality. link
I tried cap on windows and it lagged out my whole system, might need to try it again
ok so have been using @cap a lot lately, and noticed a pretty annoying bug in the auto keyboard segments generator.. It literally skipped the Option key on mac, so ⌥⌘← showed up as "⌘LOPTION" and then "⌘←" 💀 Figured cap's open-source so decided to fix it myself, and ended up making a PR lol: link @cap bro 🫡
found another one 🫠 every time I added a new clip to a project, the editor reloaded and the timeline jumped right back to 0:00. on a long edit that's a lot of scrolling back to where you were 💀 so again, fixed it: link @cap bro 🫡

What are the alternatives to Cap?
Comparisons are few and level at the top: 2 people mention moving off Loom and 2 weigh Cap against OBS, with CleanShot and Paper named once each.
The Loom mentions are both switches: one says they "recently switched from loom to @cap", and another reports cancelling a Loom account and signing up to Cap saved them $75 — so price is the stated reason in one of the two.
On OBS the two posts pull opposite ways: one asks outright whether Cap is better than OBS, adding that they use Arch, while the other calls OBS "bloated lately" and Cap a great choice for recording.
The two remaining names are one-offs rather than switches. One person recommends Cap and then offers CleanShot as the alternative if you want a one-time purchase instead of a subscription. Another answers a mention of Paper with "no need, we have @cap".
With 6 people in the section, nothing here adds up to a trend: these are individual mentions, many in reply threads where someone is asking what to record with.

recently switched from loom to @cap
@bot just saved me $75 by cancelling my @loom account and signed me up to @cap .. legendary
OBS seemed so bloated lately. @cap is a great choice!
Is it better than OBS? I use Arch btw
oh shit! 🤣 @cap is great btw ✌️or if you just want to go for a one time purchase I use @CleanShot

Questions· 16 posts from 15 people· written 27 Oct
What do people ask about Cap?
The most-asked thing is about contributions and Cap's sponsorship: 4 of the 15 people here ask whether their pull requests count. The rest are one or two people each, asking about self-hosting, a CLI or MCP, and whether their setup will hold up.
The sponsorship questions are practical and slightly anxious: whether the offer is "still going on" now that a PR got merged, whether they can send PRs at all, whether it works for more than one merged PR, and whether accessibility fixes count when sent "a lot of them at once". One says they have 18 PRs merged and "still got nothing".
2 people ask where Cap runs and whether they can host it themselves. 2 question the 3.7 GB to 440 MB comparison — what the embedded web view was holding, and whether the old figure was measured on the same machine and video, "apples to apples".
2 ask about driving Cap from outside the app: one asks whether it has a CLI, another wants an MCP so agents can record demos. 2 ask whether it will cope with their setup — a heavy Blender scene on a 16 GB Mac, and recording on an external monitor that currently means turning off the main display. Single questions cover whether an update needs a reinstall or just a download, whether editing videos costs extra, and, from one person, what Cap is.
- Do my PRs count for a sponsorship?5
- Where is it hosted, can I self-host?2
- Is the 3.7 GB to 440 MB drop fair?2
- Does it have a CLI or MCP?2
- Will it handle my setup?2
- Do I need to reinstall to update?1

Yo mine just got merged is this still going on? link

Does this work for multiple PR? another merged link
be me get 18 pr merged still got nothing 😭 @cap
was the old 3.7 gb measured in the same scenario, same 1440p video on the same m4 max? curious whether the 3.7 gb to 440 mb comparison is apples to apples

What do people want from Cap?
The largest single ask is filler-word removal: 3 of the 12 people here want "um" and "uh" stripped automatically. 2 want pull requests reviewed and merged faster, and 2 want better transcripts — the two are level. The rest are one person each.
The filler-word requests are short and direct — "automatic filler word removal", "Filler words removal for sure" — and one comes with a reason: a first recording in a long time was "perfect except for this".
The contributor asks are about throughput as much as features: people want to know when the team is "ready to triage and accept PRs", and one asks specifically about a merged PR and another still awaiting review. One person repeatedly asks for sharing to be set once rather than per person and per video: domain-based access, org-level defaults, and default permissions for new videos. Better transcripts mean speaker diarization, grouped utterances, a choice of transcription model and transcript editing.
Single wishes cover expirations on caps (3, 7 or 15 days, so they delete themselves), an audio loop, voice narration, a SwiftUI migration, more incremental releases "instead of waiting for a month", caption rendering for Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Hindi, connecting an AI model to generate versions, and more apps written in Rust.
- Filler word removal3
- Faster PR review and merging3
- Domain and org-level sharing defaults3
- Better transcripts2
- More incremental releases1
- Audio loop1

the agentic desire to add "umm" and "uhh" removal to @cap because i did my first recording with it in a long time and it's perfect except for this 😂 (next is having an agent play with the cli)
automatic filler word removal
Waiting for the web and transcription updates Pls lmk when you are ready to triage and accept PRs 🙏 New app is very cool @richiemcilroy
- Speaker diarization and proper utterances grouping in transcripts. - ability to change models in transcript models - default permissions for new videos - ability to navigate from video back to dashboard easier - better semantic video search - proper invite management via api
@cap can I please get a domain-based access to cap so I don't have to do it manually for all the people? Also org-level default access would be super nice. I can bring PRs if you'll merge them after Greptile reviews.
