How do people feel about Loom?

Most of the 35 people posting about Loom overall are fed up and leaving: 20 say they have cancelled, deleted or unsubscribed, citing the price rise and the forced Atlassian account. The counter-argument is the rebuilt Mac app, which 5 people praise as faster and smoother.

The largest group in reception is people who have left or are leaving: 20 of 35. They describe a product they once rated highly — one says it was among their favorite products and they deleted it without batting an eye — and give the price rise, free seats turning paid and the mandatory Atlassian account as their reasons. Some call it enshittification or say the acquiring company is killing it, and several name the tool they moved to.

5 people praise the rebuilt Mac app instead: faster, "way easier to control", speaker notes that scroll like a teleprompter, camera-only recording, desktop icons hidden automatically while recording. One calls it worth the $8 increase; another, who had called the old Mac app awful, says the new one is smooth as butter.

4 people offer unqualified praise — minimal, easy to use, respect for the people who build it, one reactivating a subscription — and 4, level with them, are outsiders weighing a return, one willing to retry if it is lighter than the CPU hog they remember. 2 people say it saves them meetings and back-and-forth.

What do people complain about with Loom?

Price is the biggest complaint, from 9 people, who put the increase between 100% and 500% and question what improved to justify it. Next, 5 people say basics that used to be free — downloads, trimming, sharing with their own team — now need a paid plan.

Price dominates: 9 people put the rise between 100% and 500% — a "228% price increase", a monthly bill going from $350 to $1,400, 400% "across the user seats", a 500% jump on one long-time account. People ask what in the product justifies it and criticise the timing.

5 people complain that basics now sit behind a plan: downloads and trimming, inviting a member, sharing videos with only their own team. One team's $10 seats became $18 seats after a migration turned free Creator Lite users into paid ones.

Bugs and sign-in friction are level, at 4 and 4 people: downloads refused with a not-available message, FaceTime mode showing the wrong picture, a reinstall needed after each update; and a sign-up flow with far too many asks, or a sign-in loop that returns to the start. 3 people call the desktop app heavy or laggy, 3 distrust the company — virus software flagging mic and camera access, one calling it borderline malware — and one person reports recordings stopping within five minutes.

We’re getting pretty sick of Loom too. Last month we had 19 seats at $10/user ($190/month). This month it jumped to 28 seats at $18/user ($504/month). Looks like the Atlassian migration reset our pricing and turned all our free “Creator Lite” users into paid seats. Pretty

What are the alternatives to Loom?

4 people say Loom can be replaced by something self-hosted or self-built, and 3 name Cap, run on their own servers, as what they moved to. Tella comes next with 2 people, then a tail of single mentions.

The two biggest groups point the same way. 4 people say a recorder like this can be run or built yourself: open source, or "a day of your time", with one asking whether watching videos behind an authentication wall is worth $24 per user a month.

3 people name Cap specifically. They self-host it and store video on Cloudflare R2 — "100GB of video storage costs just $1.35/month" — and call it smoother than the Loom app; one cancelled their Loom account and says the switch saved them $75.

2 people recommend Tella, one saying life got better after switching. Below that, each name is one person: Hippius for encrypted storage, replacing both Loom and Zight; Supercut as a replacement; Trupeer praised for Loom-grade UX; and Clean Shot and Screen Studio named as better Mac capture tools now that Loom got worse.

I’ve seriously thought about this. How hard can this be? Does it really deserve $24/month/user to simply watch videos behind an authentication wall with some basic analytics? @grok @bot How to long to create a loom mvp for internal use?

Questions· 12 posts from 10 people· written 27 Oct

What do people ask about Loom?

No question theme is bigger than another: each of the five has 2 people behind it. Three come from people weighing whether to stay or what to use instead; two ask how the app works and what broke in the rebuild.

The questions split five ways, evenly.

One person asks for a way to mass delete 700+ videos without clicking two to four times per video, and another can't find a setting and finds their version differs — a filter icon on one build and not theirs.

Two people ask the Loom team what early testers caught before the Mac app launched and what broke first once real usage hit it.

Two ask what to use instead: what someone who left replaced it with, and a free or cheaper Mac recorder — one because sharing videos with only their team means buying a subscription for them.

Two ask whether it still holds up: whether it got worse after the acquisition, and whether it is good enough for streaming.

  • What did you switch to?2
  • Free or cheaper alternative?2
  • What broke in the new app?2
  • Is it still worth using?2

What do people want from Loom?

Three people, three separate asks: Loom for agents that explain things in daily standups, a dynamic background blur with privacy settings that survive restarts, and a public API pool for Loom's functions. No two people ask for the same thing.

This is thin ground: 3 people, each with one request and no overlap.

One wants Loom to become a place where agents explain things, suggesting standups as the use.

One asks for the camera background to be blurred dynamically, allowing for the resources that takes, and for the privacy setting to stay on after the app restarts.

One asks for an API pool for Loom's functions.

Nothing in the posts says how widely these are wanted, or whether anyone else would use them.
