How do people feel about Mailchimp?

No single view of Mailchimp carries the section: the largest group, 4 people, joke or predict it is being left behind, 3 admire the brand, 2 are impressed by specific features and 2 say they are not going anywhere.

Being left behind has the largest group, 4 people, and the posts are jokes rather than user reports. A parody thread — the most-reached post on the page — has one indie hacker build a Mailchimp clone in a few prompts at $49 a month and another undercut it with a $5 lifetime deal; others say sending platforms like Mailchimp are "dead" or that Mailchimp is watching like Blockbuster watched Netflix.

Brand feeling runs the other way. 3 people admire the company itself: Freddie-era branding, an odd yellow, a hand-drawn illustration system and a tone of voice that made email marketing feel human, alongside its no-outside-funding sale for $12B.

2 people praise features they discovered — conditionals in merge tags, an automation that tags a contact when they click a link in an email — one planning to try more. 2 say they are staying, including a Mailchimp user with "no interest switching" to a cheaper newcomer because it may not be around tomorrow.

Indiehacker A: > I vibecoded Mailchimp in just a few prompts > they raised prices so I built Slopchimp > you can use it too, for $49 / mo Indiehacker B: > I vibecoded Slopchimp > $49 is a price gouging scam > my slop is $5 lifetime

Mailchimp in the Freddie years. An odd yellow, a hand-drawn illustration system and a tone of voice that made email marketing feel human. Proof that a brand can be playful and still be trusted with a business tool.

I have a MailChimp account and have no interest switching to Marc's alternative. This will save me like 15 and dollars a month but introduces a major risk knowing that Marc's product may not be there tomorrow. Businesses need stability and future proof

What do people complain about with Mailchimp?

The largest group in the section, 7 people, calls Mailchimp too expensive, citing fees that climb with list size and bills for contacts who have unsubscribed. Delivery trouble, slow support, lost account access, broken features and complexity are each raised by 3 people or fewer.

Cost is the recurring complaint. 7 people say Mailchimp is too expensive: fees climb as the list grows, it bills for unsubscribed contacts unless you archive them, and a paid plan is needed before automations will actually send. One quotes the customer line "mailchimp got too expensive"; another lists it among subscriptions cancelled this year; a third pays £90 a month for 6,000 subscribers and wants to leave.

3 people report delivery trouble: one sent 10,000 emails to double opt-in subscribers, saw a 97% delivery rate and a 3% open rate, and is weighing SMS instead; others say mail is landing in spam.

Support is slow and generic for 2 people — long waits with a case number, a reply that was no help, no way to reach a live person, an important email that could not be sent. 2 people lost account access, one after years without logging in; 2 report a skip function that does not work or segments that cannot be exported from automations; 2 find it overcomplicated or "too annoying".

  • Poor deliverability3

Agreed. The worst part is paying for people who already left. Mailchimp bills for unsubscribed contacts unless you archive them. I compared what the same list costs on the alternatives: link Check your contact count before you renew.

What are the alternatives to Mailchimp?

People weighing a move spread across many options rather than one: MailCheap, Brevo, Amazon SES, Beehiiv and self-built sending are level, each named by 2 people, with Klaviyo and MailerLite mentioned once each. Price and billing model are what they compare.

Five routes away from Mailchimp are named by the same number of people, so no alternative leads. MailCheap — Marc Lou's self-hostable tool — draws 2 people: one likes its visual editor and how easily agents can manage it, and plans to resell it to clients still on Sendinblue or Mailchimp; another Mailchimp user refuses to move, saying the saving is small next to the risk of a young product disappearing.

Brevo and Amazon SES each get 2 people, both on cost. Brevo is weighed on billing model — by contacts or by sends, depending on list size and how often you mail — and comes with SMS at a similar price. SES is called far cheaper at volume but "enterprisey and complicated", with questions about IP warmup and API keys.

Beehiiv (2) is weighed on delivery rates, with people crediting the work Mailchimp does with ISPs and blocklists. Self-built sending (2) saves money — €80 a month in one case — but both warn that sending from your own server lands in spam. Klaviyo is recommended for ecommerce; frustration with MailerLite prompts one evaluation.

Self hosting @marclou 's link He did a great job. I love the visual editor, and how easy agents can manage it and can do the final tweaking. I'm still waiting approval from amazon SES for bulk sending it's over for Brevo, MailChimp...

23 content pieces a month for client sites here. The newsletter drives most of our 9 monthly leads - best channel we run. SES pricing kills Mailchimp at our volume. One check before switching: does MailCheap handle IP warmup or do we throttle sends ourselves?

Questions· 2 posts· written 27 Oct

What do people ask about Mailchimp?

2 people ask, and the two questions are unrelated and recent: one wants a newsletter service that is easier to set up and manage than Mailchimp, the other asks whether a suspicious email came from a compromised ESP like Mailchimp.

The section holds 2 people and 2 posts, both from the last week. One asks for the best, easiest-to-set-up newsletter service, calling Mailchimp "too annoying" and asking for something fast, easy, free or close to it, with easy integration a plus; the same post is filed under complaints that Mailchimp is overcomplicated.

The other comes out of a security thread about a suspicious email: someone asks whether it came from a compromised ESP like Mailchimp and asks for the full email headers to check.

Nobody here asks about price, features, or how to do something inside Mailchimp.
