zed is my daily driver, not because its written in Rust, but because the consequences of it being written in Rust. Its a fast, lean, editing machine.

How do people feel about Zed?
Most of the 83 people here like the editor: 58 praise Zed as fast and lean, and 9 single out Delta, its separate agent app. A further 10 use it while keeping another tool alongside, and 3 are unconvinced or put off by the AI push.
Almost all of the praise is about speed and weight: startup and hand edits feel instant, memory use stays low next to VS Code's, the download is small, and it runs without bloat. Developers who switched call Zed their daily driver, like it with vim keybindings, and a few build their own apps and settings pages on GPUI, Zed's Rust UI framework. A reply describing it as a GUI editor that isn't terrible travelled furthest in the section.
Delta, the separate agent app, has its own fans (9 people): they like replying to any agent message, sharing a thread with its full context, and working across attached repos and worktrees, and one calls it a "life changing second brain harness".
The held-back (10) keep VS Code, opencode or WebStorm alongside, or stay while waiting on git and devcontainer fixes and faster folder and worktree switching. The put-off (3) either don't see what Delta adds or dislike AI being pushed into the editor.
- Loves Zed59
- Praises Delta15
- Likes it but held back10
- Praise for GPUI4
- Unconvinced or put off4

@zeddotdev is so much less bloated + very low mem and cpu usage , lol even less than powershell terminal GGs ZED.
Delta by @zeddotdev is some great stuff. enjoying working with it, especially for working on plans and reviewing code.
I was bummed when y’all got rid of the old context engineering style of ai integration. But Delta feels like a return back to that original feeling Being able to comment on anything in multiple attached repos and all the worktree shenanigans totally working transparently is epic
I love zed, my IDE shouldn't take 30 seconds to load, it should be fast. Folder switching, worktree switching should be fast

What do people complain about with Zed?
No complaint is shared widely: bugs and broken features is the biggest theme at 5 people, ahead of missing notebook and PDF support (4). Then 3 worry Delta ties their work to Zed's servers, level with git gaps and interface confusion (3 and 3 people).
Bugs are reported one at a time rather than as a pattern: free-tier edit predictions that disappeared overnight without notice, files from ChatGPT that won't open, ACP output that doesn't look like the same agent elsewhere, a worktree that fails with "Operation not permitted", a login that won't go through, font names invisible in the floating font bar.
The missing-viewers complaint is firmer: no Jupyter notebooks, no .ipynb diff and no built-in PDF viewer, which people say they miss from what other editors offer.
On servers, the worry is lock-in and code control: Delta running only through Zed's own servers, and a verdict that a company which won't let code be stored externally can't use it.
Smaller groups raise git features ("they fumbled the git features"), confusing onboarding and UI details, Chinese text that breaks lines and rendered as boxes in the web version, no Delta for Intel Macs, devcontainer support thin enough to send someone back to VS Code, weak web and PHP support, and GPUI docs developers can't find.
- Bugs and broken features6
- Tied to Zed's servers5
- No notebook or PDF support4
- Git features fall short3
- Confusing UI and hard-to-find things3
- Chinese text renders badly3

Hey @zeddotdev what happened to your free tier edit predictions? it seems to have just disappeared overnight and there's been no comments or updates on it?
2026-10-21T09:19:32+01:00 ERROR [crates/worktree/src/worktree.rs:511] failed to open local worktree root at /Users/booker/Documents/ChatGPT/observability-post/post.md: Operation not permitted (os error 1)
For some reason, @zeddotdev still doesn’t have a built-in PDF viewer.
What plugins do you currently use that don’t have a Zed equivalent? Jupyter notebooks are the only one I am missing. I miss the draw io extension, but I can live without it
I hate to say it, but it will never be possible to use Delta in a company that does not allow its code to be stored externally without having control over it themselves.

What are the alternatives to Zed?
VS Code is the comparison that comes up: 11 of the 31 people weighing Zed against something name it, switching from it, running both, or missing one piece of it. Beyond that the field is a long tail, led by t3code (3 people) and Dash (3).
VS Code is the reference point, and the reasons are weight and responsiveness: a VS Code that felt bloated, memory claims of around 20 GB against Zed's, less input lag and cleaner type rendering, a small download, no bloatware. Some have switched outright; others run both, or name the one thing they miss, its git interface. One likes Zed but is going back to VS Code for better devcontainer support.
Beyond that, comparisons are a person or two each. t3code is a primary for some with Zed "on standby", while others say Delta does it better. Dash's price is questioned when Zed is "good enough". Orca draws people for its AI and for carrying on from a phone. JetBrains and WebStorm users still love them but find themselves on Zed more. Single voices mention Neovim switchers, Gram as Zed without the AI, the Suzuri fork with PDF and LaTeX, Sublime, Maestri, opencode for feature work, Amp, and Gitkraken's graph.

if you like GUI editors, @zeddotdev is basically like a version of VS Code that’s not terrible. if you like terminal editors, i’ve heard good things about Helix
I stopped using VS Code a year ago, felt pretty bloated. I now mostly work with Claude Code in the terminal. If I need to editor code, I use @zeddotdev
Zed is fast. The only thing I'm missing from VS Code is the Git interface. It's there, but it's just not the same. The VS Code one was more useful for some reason. @zeddotdev
I really like @zeddotdev, but I need better devcontainer support and I'm not sure how to get the PRs to improve that reviewed yet :( So I'm going to give VS Code another try.
Most of the time @t3dotcodes shows what I want it to and when not I always have something lightweight like @zeddotdev on standby. T3 also helps you set up one click remote connections on most of the popular editors.

Questions· 11 posts from 10 people· written 27 Oct
What do people ask about Zed?
No question dominates: each of the five themes here comes from 2 people, out of 10. The most concrete are what Delta adds over Zed, when things open source, and when agent integrations land.
The advantage question is the most concrete: a positive Zed user says they don't get the purpose of Delta — what a separate app does that Zed plus a model connected to your files can't — and someone who tried Zed asks what its advantage is.
Two people ask when Zed and Delta will be open source, calling it the moat, and one adds a request for LSP support in Delta. Two ask when agent integrations arrive, with "ACP when?" as the whole question, and Claude Code named alongside it.
Two want recommendations rather than facts: whether anyone actually uses Delta, how they use it, and what their wow moment was. Two ask how it behaves: whether a subthread answer stays visible to the teammate who tagged you, and what happens to synced Claude Code session history after a squash merge.
- What's the advantage?3
- Open source plans2
- When do agent integrations land?2
- Who uses Delta, and how?2
- How do Delta threads behave?2

You didn’t get the point and I’m trying to give you honest feedback. I’m very positive about Zed and I don’t get the purpose of Delta. Zed can do what you have just said in the OP.
As a Zed user I don't understand why would you need a separate app for what you've just said. Both claude and chatgpt can connect to your google drive and do whatever and send it via gmail to whoever. Maybe I'm just not a target audience for Delta...
When will it be open source? Thats pretty much your moat.
ACP when?
Is anyone using link by @zeddotdev ? How do you use it? What was your wow moment?

What do people want from Zed?
LaTeX and math rendering is the biggest ask (4 people), with remote and self-hosted running next (3). Everything else is one or two people per feature, from Jupyter and a PDF viewer to Typst, an existing Claude subscription and Elixir highlighting.
LaTeX and math rendering is asked for most plainly: people want it in markdown and say it would make Zed the best environment for scientific computing and ML workflows; the last check was that math in markdown still didn't render. Remote running is close behind: Delta on your own servers, NUCs and Mac minis with its UI on a laptop, an API to message it, and one user saying that being pushed onto Zed's remote setup would make them churn.
The rest is individual: Typst equations, pulling Figma's real spacing and color tokens rather than just frame structure, Elixir highlighting as the hurdle to team adoption, an existing Claude Code subscription working inside Delta, Jupyter and a PDF viewer built in, Arabic support asked for repeatedly by one person, Delta as an optional plugin inside Zed, named thread tags, a mobile app, GitLab support in Delta, a real plugin system, and own model keys such as DeepSeek or Z.ai.
- LaTeX and math rendering4
- Remote server support4
- Arabic support3
- Typst support2
- Use my Claude subscription2
- Figma tokens into code2

LaTeX rendering in @zeddotdev would make it truly the best environment for scientific computing and ML workflows. Please make this PR happen :) link
Does Zed supports Latex rendering too? If yes - this can be closed: link If no, please consider backporting :)
like right now delta can only run on my one computer. i have servers, nucs, mac minis, would be nice to run there and use delta UI from laptop. if I'm forced into using zed's remote stuff I'll just churn ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hi! I love Delta but I need to be able to use my Claude sub please!!
ngl id want it to read the real spacing and color tokens from figma so the code matches without tweaking
