.@colindougherty built the Ecomm Cowboy Halo game with @perplexity_ai. The process: a project file, reference screenshots from real Halo games, and every sponsor logo turned into gear. The Slash saber. The Perplexity pistol. The Comcast cannon. The Proppel peacemaker. Then rounds of playtesting, a 2v2 mode and an eight-player King of the Hill. A couple of days of prompting is all it took.
Perplexity on X
Praise leads — games built from a couple of days of prompting, trip plans, school materials — against 14 people who call it wrong or finished. The loudest arguments are about two new things: faster Computer runs, and running locally on a Mac.

How do people feel about Perplexity?
Praise is the largest theme — 35 of 75 people speak well of it — but not a majority: 14 are disappointed, and recent talk about faster Computer runs and running locally divides between enthusiasm and demands for proof.
What draws praise is range of use. One person credits a couple of days of prompting with a full Halo-style game — a project file, screenshots from real Halo games, sponsor logos turned into gear — while others describe trip planning, school worksheets and presentations, or an assistant they ask everything. A paying user says they would drop their other subscriptions before Perplexity.
The disappointed are fewer but blunt: one calls it "utter crap" and cancelled after two weeks, others ask what happened to it or say nobody uses it, and one user posted a plain goodbye.
Recent talk is about two changes. Ultrafast, shipped as a speed setting rather than a separate model pick, draws praise for long Computer tasks: less waiting between asking and getting finished work back. Running the model and agent on your own Mac is called "the version of an agent we'd trust with real files". Skeptics want the claims stress-tested past the math benchmark, worry about agents committing to main, and ask whether local holds up when the Wi-Fi drops.

@perplexity_ai is basically my unpaid personal assistant. I ask it everything except what to eat… because even it can’t make that decision for me. 😂
I still don't understand how the hell @perplexity_ai computer can be so amazing. It is one of the greatest products that I've ever used. I would cancel all my subscriptions but never, ever would I cancel Perplexity and @cursor_ai. These are two brilliantly amazing products that have ever been built. Truly proves that great applications will deliver immense value despite being built on top of a frontier model. Again just making it clear: I don't know about how much value they will be able to capture but they definitely do create amazing value for all their users.
Perplexity is utter crap. It will refuse simple research projects if they don’t support the Left’s narrative. I cancelled my subscription after 2 weeks.
hmm i would say for computer speed is capability and those long tasks were failing generally on time and not reasoning. this should fix it.

What do people complain about with Perplexity?
Complaints split evenly between money and accuracy: 6 people find fast modes and features locked behind Max or Pro, and 6 say answers are wrong or unverified — level, with billing trouble behind them at 4 people.
Price complaints centre on gating: Ultrafast Astra and Sol are only on the Max plan, one person doubts the extra speed is worth double the price, and a Pro subscriber who got a week of use was told to wait until next year for more credits. Others describe a free Pro offer followed by a card charge, a cancellation answered with a warning of further charge attempts within 24-48 hours, credit-card details that can't be deleted, and no automatic invoice emails on enterprise plans.
On accuracy, people describe names introduced without checking their relevance, a chart drawn wrong the first time and right the second, and an answer that is usually "according to a website we didn't pay". Two say it is wrong constantly, or reframes their complaint instead of correcting the answer.
Smaller counts: fully local mode wants 36GB of memory and the app takes 20GB, one user keeps getting GPT-6.1 after choosing another model and threatens to cancel, and Ask and Discover Daily are gone.

Ultrafast Astra and Sol are only on the Max plan. The normal seat still gets the regular speed. Speed is gated again.
i doubt the extra speed is worth double the price.
I got @perplexity_ai pro… was able to use it for 1 week… done… very very disappointed! They said I have to wait till next year to get credits again…. Crazy! Waste of money!
@perplexity_ai Your AI introduced names without verifying their relevance, then admitted it shouldn’t have used them as evidence. When challenged, it repeatedly reframed my complaint instead of correcting its answer. This is misleading, not just a citation problem. #DontTrustAI
@perplexity_ai is "the answer engine." The answer is usually "according to a website we didn't pay."

What are the alternatives to Perplexity?
There is no shared rival: each comparison is a single person's, naming Claude and DeepSeek, Google AI Studio, Bloomberg, built-in search in ChatGPT and Gemini, Gemini's free tier, paid job-search tools, or models they run themselves.
The comparisons don't converge. One user says Claude and DeepSeek have a more reasonable chat UI, and that Google AI Studio gives more control over context by editing or removing messages. One asks how many people actually move off Bloomberg, doubting the habit breaks. One argues Perplexity is fading because OpenAI, Google and Anthropic put web search and source citations inside their own chatbots. One expects Computer's background tasks and browser automation to make paid job-search tools redundant for job hunting and networking. One user who hit usage limits says they built and run their own models without caps. And one lists Perplexity among the alternatives once Gemini limited free accounts to its Lite model.
None of these posts travelled far.

perplexity chat and openai chat are bad. Astra is good. can astra fix dummy chat, DeepSeek and claude have more reasonable chat ui/ux
google studio provides a cool way to be in more control context, by editing the assistant response message, removing messages and more. even the ui is bad, and laggy, the result of bad llm defeat best ones.
Curious how many actually move off Bloomberg for it though. That habit is hard to break
#Perplexity AI is fading from mainstream tech headlines because major competitors (like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic) have integrated web-search and source-citation features directly into their own dominant chatbots, absorbing Perplexity's core use case? @perplexity_ai ??
@perplexity_ai computer is sick. Background tasks + browser automation is going to make it awesome job hunting and networking. Sucks to be a paid job search tool though 👀 link

What do people ask about Perplexity?
The largest question, from 6 of 20 people, is what Perplexity has become: still relevant, dead, or now an agent. The rest are practical: how local and cloud modes divide work, whether the fast models lose quality, and what usage costs.
Six people ask some version of what happened to @perplexity_ai, from rarely seeing it around to "Is it dead?" and not hearing updates for months, through to one who hasn't thought about it in a while and asks whether we're still in the game; another wonders whether Perplexity has turned into an agent.
Local mode raises the design questions. Does a local task that needs a web lookup escalate to the cloud automatically, or stop and say so? Which tasks still need the cloud once the on-device model hits its limits, and how does a hybrid setup run? Two people want numbers first: how much RAM before it feels usable, and how many tokens per second it produces.
The fast models get the same test: same quality, or a lighter variant that trades accuracy for speed? Others ask how two agents committing to the same repo resolve conflicts, what actually breaks inside a 0.0002% error rate, what verification adds in latency, and what one real Computer workflow costs a month.

What happened to @perplexity_ai, rarely see it around nowadays
What happened to @perplexity_ai Not heard any updates since months. Is it dead?
haven’t had to think about @perplexity_ai in a while, are we still in the game?
Genuine question: when a local task needs something the on-device model can't handle - a web lookup, say - does the agent escalate to the cloud automatically, or stop and say so? That local/cloud boundary is the thing I'd want to test first.
Speed matters most on the long tasks where you're just sitting there waiting for it to finish. Is Ultrafast the same quality as the normal version, or a lighter variant that trades a little accuracy for speed?

What do people want from Perplexity?
No request has more than 2 people behind it. The largest are level at 2 people each: automatic local-or-cloud routing, open source with a fully local build, and Perplexity as a business platform. Every other ask is one person's.
The routing group wants Perplexity to decide for itself whether a request runs on the local model or in the cloud — "a built in auto-routing mechanism", one person calls it, and sticky too. Another would allow local models in chat while flagging that cloud gives better answers, and suggests hosting the routing classifier on the device.
Level with them: people asking for open source and a fully local build, and people who want Perplexity to become a business platform, either as a verified-outcome platform or as "the orchestrator of the business operating system".
The single asks are concrete: local mode working on the mainstream 16GB laptops people buy, a Perplexity Code product shipped soon, faster work on Windows, PPLX Radio brought back, an append-only commit log recording which agent and session made each change with clear merge rules, and controls to check a long task before it finishes.
- Automatic local-or-cloud routing3
- Open source and fully local2
- Perplexity as a business platform2
- Running on 16GB machines1
- Perplexity Code1
- Shipped faster on Windows1

A built in auto-routing mechanism would be great @themtsyh. Very sticky, too!
Yall are goated. I think it's fine to allow for local models to be used in chat, just highlight that they should use cloud for better responses.
We need the sauce!! The open source
Perplexity should evolve into the verified outcome platform building a moat around trusted execution and independently verified results, and expanding into the infrastructure that enables businesses to deploy reliable, profitable AI agents at scale. @perplexity_ai @AskPerplexity
Deploy @perplexity_ai as the orchestrator of the business operating system.
