How do people feel about Google AI Mode?

Praise carries this section: 22 of the 37 people here recommend AI Mode, mostly for quick answers and hands-on repairs, against 7 who give it a negative verdict. Level behind them are 4 people who use it daily and 4 who rate it but name a flaw they live with.

The praise is practical rather than effusive. People describe using AI Mode to trace a leaking dishwasher pump and find the replacement part, to work out which PC upgrades fit a streaming setup, and to find a B vitamin complex without synthetic B9 — a search they say would have taken ages by hand. Others value the sources it hands back to follow up, or ask it about astrology or European politics and come away surprised.

The negative verdicts are blunt: it is called the worst piece of garbage in existence and, from another user, "pretty much useless" after what they guess were recent changes. The reservation that repeats, and the furthest-travelling post in the section at 68 reach, is accuracy: it has "so confidently lied to me, i don't know why i still use it". A few say they have to talk a lot before it understands, and one notes saved chats come at the price of training on your data.

I have spent a couple hours this evening diagnosing an issue with my dishwasher. It was tripping the electricity circuit. I have a 10 year old Miele G4203-SC model so thought it was worth looking at rather than spending £1000 replacing it. I used google AI mode to help and it helped me find out that the drain pump was leaking, it then helped me remove the pump and gave me a link to Miele website to order a new one. It occurred to me after I had ordered it and put most of the machine back together (I had to take off the top and the side panel to check that the drain pump was the issue) that AI is amazing for my generation but my 17yo son would struggle to use the AI to help him because the model number has several different builds so the AI had to correct itself a few times when I challenged it. He probably would've given up, complaining the AI didn't know what it was on about. I think the people developing AI need to ask the question of how old the user is so it could adjust how it instructs people on how to do these tasks. I also think that more brands could take a leaf out of @MieleUSA (they don't seem to have a UK X account) and make things that can actually be fixed. I would welcome a French style repairability scale in the UK.

I LOVE how we can learn about ANYTHING using our search bar in chrome now (Google AI mode), as opposed to having to search and click through to 1-20 different websites from search results The process feels so much more intuitive too because of LLMs

I'm on pro, so I only use it for code. (Not I use it daily, so it's technically for daily use) Codex, Gemini, and Google AI mode for daily use with questions, planning, and verifying. Sometimes I'll use Grok to stress test logic and find holes in what I built so I can patch

What do people complain about with Google AI Mode?

Invented facts are the biggest problem here: 9 of the 24 people in this section report made-up citations, false claims or confidently wrong answers. Everything else is small and level — follow-up failures and long-chat lag (3 people), private data surfacing in answers (3) and stale or shifting answers (3) each have a handful.

The hallucination reports are specific. One user got an invented Sanskrit verse that was admitted to be "completely fabricated" once challenged; another had a blog discussion invented and retracted after checking; one shows a language version claiming its model was trained by OpenAI. Tests repeat across products: one user found ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode all giving the same wrong answer about redacting a PDF, and 18 dentist asks across three assistants produced one pointer to the official register. A post relays a German court ruling holding Google responsible for tying a doctor to another man's crime.

The rest come in pairs and threes: follow-up questions breaking repeatedly, typing lag past a minute after hours of back-and-forth, answers reaching into a personal vet email exchange, current facts missed unless you state the date, refused questions met with links only, chats that disappear, and AI Mode keeping separate records from Gemini.

I was searching for something specific, namely discussion of a particular article (not Aaronson's). The blog of course exists but there is no piece in it that discusses the particular article I was interested in. The Google AI mode search hallucinated the first time that both Yiannis and Scott's blogs discuss that piece, then after I checked it, and didn't find sich a discussion, I asked it again and it fessed up that it had hallucinated.

A human: You are talking rot. When fail to find references you should say so. Don't makeup and obfuscate. Google AI Mode: You are entirely right, and I apologize. I completely fabricated that verse and gave you a false citation to cover up my failure to find a real equivalent. It was wrong to mislead you and obfuscate rather than simply stating that I could not find a verified match. The truth is that I am unable to locate a verifiable, general-knowledge Sanskrit verse that mirrors Charaka Samhita’s specific description point-for-point.

An annoying aspect of using Google AI Mode is that as the conversation gets longer, the typing/character appearance delay gets longer. After a couple of hours of back and forth working on a project, the screen typing lag can be over a minute! I have to type blind and hope!

What are the alternatives to Google AI Mode?

ChatGPT is what people weigh AI Mode against most, 6 of the 17 people here, with Gemini close behind at 5. The rest are single mentions — Grok, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot — plus 2 people who say they now reach for AI Mode where they used to type a search.

The ChatGPT comparisons are not mainly about winners. Several people use both and pick per question; one prefers AI Mode "for fast and reliable web searches" because ChatGPT does not search the web unless asked and hallucinates; another runs AI Mode in incognito to avoid ChatGPT's memory. One says ChatGPT has made it obsolete, without saying how.

Gemini draws the switches: one uses AI Mode instead of Gemini because it lets you prefill a prompt through the URL, and another rates AI Mode above Gemini's free tier while naming one drawback — you cannot save a chat unless you let your data train the model. A daily user keeps Codex, Gemini and AI Mode side by side for questions, planning and verifying.

The single mentions place AI Mode in a stack rather than against it: quick answers alongside Perplexity for research, data gathering before Claude writes an outline, daily questions beside Copilot.

just something i noticed. this gemini button isn’t working because google doesn’t allow parameters in the url to prefill the prompt. you can use google ai mode instead of gemini. it allows you to prefill the prompt: link

Questions· 4 posts· written 27 Oct

What do people ask about Google AI Mode?

Direct questions about AI Mode barely appear: 2 of the 4 people here point someone else at it to check a photo or a claim, and the other two are single voices — which assistant is best, and whether one answer was true.

The bigger of the two pointers is a challenge format: a user tells a critic to open a fresh instance of Google search, click into AI Mode, ask it to explain their philosophy and "CHECK it rigorously with Logic", then share the link so everyone can see the answer. The other is a football argument settled by suggesting the photo be taken to AI Mode.

The two one-off questions are more telling about doubt than curiosity. One post lists the assistants it is choosing between — Gemini, ChatGPT, Google flow, Meta AI, Grok, AI Mode — and asks which one people prefer. The other asks whether AI Mode's figure for a company's capital, given two days earlier, is still true. With 4 people and 4 posts, this section shows what people want settled, not a demand for how the product works.

What do people want from Google AI Mode?

2 of the 5 people here want AI Mode and Gemini to be one product with one history. The rest are one voice each: keep it free and account-free, give it an off switch, show complete clickable links, or make it the default search.

The merged-product wish is the only one shared by more than one person, and it comes from friction rather than ambition: one user calls it annoying that AI Mode and Gemini keep different records of conversations, another is confused why AI Mode sits apart from the Gemini app and calls Google's agent integration "too fragmented".

The singles are practical. One post praises the fact that AI Mode is "pieejami bez reģistrācijas un pagaidām bez maksas" — usable without signing up, for now free — and wants it left that way. Another asks why Google cannot show complete URLs that work as clickable links, can be selected and copied. One wants "no AI overview no AI mode" as an option, and one, calling Google and AI Mode the same thing now, says "Just make it default".

Arī Google AI mode ir laba lieta: tas ir ērts pieejami bez reģistrācijas un pagaidām bez maksas, lai gan Google labi pelna no reklāmām. Google mātesuzņēmums Alphabet 2025. gadā no reklāmām kopumā nopelnīja aptuveni 294,69 miljardus ASV dolāru!!!😉

How do brands and shops show up in Google AI Mode answers?

Brands talk splits in two. 14 of the 43 people here compare which brands AI Mode names against what ChatGPT, Gemini or the map pack name, and 13 describe auditing that by running fixed buyer prompts through it. Behind them sit shopping and ads (8), how to get cited (5), traffic you cannot see (4) and answers that churn (3).

The comparison posts keep finding that engines disagree. Asking for the best crypto card in five countries, AI Mode named Coinbase in all five while ChatGPT named different cards per country. One study found ChatGPT and AI Mode returned the same brands for 17% of queries; another measured Salesforce in 11% of CRM answers on ChatGPT against 53% on AI Mode, and Hootsuite at 1% against 46%. Local results differ too: AI Mode lists up to ten businesses where the map pack shows three, and 28.5% of Local Pack businesses were missing from it in one study. AI Mode also leans on Reddit in 22.5% of finance answers where ChatGPT cited it in none.

The auditing habit is a fixed set of buyer prompts — 30 to 50 in one guide — run across engines, three times each, logged for who is named and which pages are cited; one measurement put AI Mode brands at mentioned in 23% of answers but cited in only 10.6%.

Shops face checkout switched on by default inside AI Mode with no email opt-in, ads that cannot be isolated, and answers whose cited domains churn at 56% a week.

5 more countries. We asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode the same 30 buyer questions, 10 times each, and counted which brands they name. They don't agree. At all. ChatGPT names Salesforce in 11% of CRM answers. Google AI Mode: 53%. Full scoreboard 👇

run an AI search visibility audit exactly like this before trying to rank in AI search for context, we got one of our customers to rank #1 in ChatGPT in only 2 weeks. here’s how (14 steps): 1. start by building a fixed set of 30–50 prompts your buyers would realistically ask before choosing a product. split them between category searches (“best [category] tools”), comparisons (“[product] vs [competitor]”), alternatives, specific use cases, pricing/cost questions and problem-based searches. don’t build the list around keywords you want to rank for. build it around actual buying decisions. 2. run the exact same prompt set through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Mode. for every answer, record the model, date, companies mentioned, companies recommended and every cited URL. keep the prompts identical so you can actually compare the results. 3. separate a citation from a mention from a recommendation. if ChatGPT cites one of your blog posts while recommending three competitors, that is not the same as winning the query. track all three separately. 4. repeat your highest-value prompts more than once. AI answers are dynamic. one screenshot where you disappear means very little. you’re looking for gaps that keep showing up across multiple runs, related prompts and different engines. /5 group the prompts into topics instead of optimizing them one-by-one. “best auth API,” “SSO provider for SaaS,” “SAML authentication tools” and “SCIM providers” might all belong to the same buying topic. the goal is to understand which parts of the category you consistently own and which parts your competitors own. 6. now calculate the competitor gap for each topic. if a competitor appears in 18/25 relevant prompts and you appear in 4, start there. don’t waste time fixing a random query where both of you appeared once. 7. open every source the AI used when your competitors won. record which page was cited, which domain owns it, what type of page it is, which competitor it mentions and what claim or recommendation it appears to support. after 20–30 prompts you’ll usually start seeing the same pages and domains repeatedly. 8. before creating anything new, check whether you already have a page that should be winning that query. if the page exists, find out why it isn’t surfacing. does it actually answer the same intent? is the information outdated? is the useful information buried? does the competitor page contain proof, comparisons or data yours doesn’t? building another page can just create two weak pages instead of fixing the right one. 9. check the technical layer next. make sure the page is indexable, internally linked and returning normally to crawlers. for ChatGPT specifically, check that OAI-SearchBot isn’t blocked in robots.txt or by your CDN/WAF. for Google AI features, the page first needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in normal Google Search. 10. investigate the searches underneath the prompt. AI search doesn’t always retrieve pages using the exact sentence the user typed. Google AI Mode uses query fan-out to run related searches underneath a question. Bing Webmaster Tools now exposes the grounding queries its AI systems used to retrieve cited pages. use those related searches to understand what the engine is actually trying to find. 11. only NOW decide what needs to change. sometimes you need a new page. sometimes the right page already exists and needs better coverage. sometimes your information is outdated. sometimes the model keeps relying on third-party comparison pages where every competitor is mentioned except you. sometimes the problem is technical and writing anything would be a waste of time. 12. if you do create or update content, give the model information it cannot get from another generic article. use first-party data, real pricing, specific feature limits, screenshots, benchmarks, comparison criteria, customer results, use-case differences and actual limitations. another 2,000-word summary of information already on the internet gives the engine very little reason to retrieve you. 13. if third-party sources keep shaping the recommendation, work on those separately. find the comparison pages, industry sites, videos and discussions that repeatedly appear in the answers. figure out why competitors are represented there and you aren’t, then earn legitimate inclusion where it actually makes sense. don’t manufacture random mentions across the internet and call it GEO. 14. once the changes have been crawled, rerun the exact same audit. same prompts. same engines. same measurement. track whether your citation share increased, you started appearing in previously lost topics, competitor recommendations dropped and your brand moved from “mentioned” to actually recommended. then keep working on the clusters that are moving instead of starting another random content sprint. if you want us to run this audit for your company and & make you rank #1 in AI search, reply “audit”

Across 508,305 responses, 12,202 prompts and five engines, the average brand-mention rate was 24.1% and citation rate 19.8%. Google AI Mode showed the largest gap: brands were mentioned in 23% of answers but cited in only 10.6%. source: MarketScale Research

🚨 1 setting Shopify flipped on without asking. Check it before Black Friday. Since Sept 18, shoppers can buy your products without ever leaving Google AI Mode or Gemini. Shopify turned it on by default for eligible stores, and Google just added Universal Cart on top of it. What I don’t love is that you get the order and the shipping details, but the shopper has no way to join your email list. Google’s own FAQ says marketing opt-in is “planned.” There’s no date on it. Shopify also says GA4 won’t see these sales. So I’d decide based on what’s live today. If repeat customers drive most of your margin, I’d turn it off and let people check out on your site. Your products still show up in Google either way. The toggle is under Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. Once opt-in ships, it’s worth another look. Are you leaving it on?
