The largest group, 10 people, recommends Penpot as the open-source design tool to use; 8 more praise it for their own work and 7 are drawn by its MCP server. Figma is the yardstick, and the gripes are crashes, free-plan limits and agent work needing fixes.

How do people feel about Penpot?
Recommending it is the biggest single strand: 10 people point to Penpot as the open-source design tool to use, with 8 more praising it as a tool that works well for their own work. 7 are drawn by agent workflows through its MCP server; 5 are still only planning to try it and 3 came away disappointed.
Recommendations are often short: the name dropped in reply to a "what should I use" thread, or listed with the basics — it runs in the browser, can be installed on your own server, an Inspect tab hands developers SVG, CSS and HTML, and layouts use real CSS Grid and Flex. The longer ones add design tokens, components and variants and a local MCP server.
Enthusiasm comes from people using it: a studio that self-hosted it calls it an "incredible tool" and is still getting the hang of the MCP side; someone who does not design says it works perfectly while admitting they cannot compare it with Figma; one likes that boards, pages, flex and grid and design tokens carry the same names as the web, so no cheatsheet is needed.
Agents are the third draw — agents reading real design files as the practical use, agents building boards in a self-hosted instance, plugin code run on the canvas through the MCP server. 5 people are installing it or meaning to try it; 3 tried it and found it still behind Figma.
- Recommends it11
- Loves it8
- Great with AI agents7
- Curious, planning to try5
- Let down, falls short3

I recently installed a self-hosted instance of Penpot at my design studio, and it's been an incredible tool! We've been using it through MCP, and we're still getting the hang of it!
you're webdeving/designing from Penpot to web and vice & versa? Board page → Page Flex layout → Flex layout Grid layout → Grid layout Design tokens → Design tokens Same concepts, same names! 😍😌 no cheatsheet needed. thank you penpot! 🙏🤝
Which of the 10 would you stress-test first? My vote is Penpot with its MCP server, since agents reading real design files is the most practical use. Curious what yours is.
Nice, I'll check it out. You're the second person to recommend @penpotapp

What do people complain about with Penpot?
Two complaints are level at 3 people each — crashes, lag and rough edges, and the free plan's limits and pricing — with 2 describing agent workflows that take many calls and repeated corrections.
Crashes are reported bluntly: Penpot and OpenPencil "just crash and lag randomly", one person asking for something better. Rough edges get picked apart in detail — plugins confined to a single page, worked around with a wrapper; colour values that show decimals by default; howtos only in English that leave a reader tired.
The pricing talk reads the plan table closely. The page says "No limits" while the table caps the free plan at eight team members, 10 GB of storage and seven days of version history; paid is $7 per editor with Unlimited capped at $175 a month, so from the 26th editor on, adding people stops adding cost. One comparison sets Figma Professional at $16 per editor a month billed annually against Penpot's free core.
Agent work is the third gripe: about twenty calls and plenty of corrections — wrong font, overlapping variants, icon scales — for a screen a rival tool drew in roughly four, and hours spent nagging a model to fix what it made.
- Crashes, lag and rough edges3
- Free plan limits and pricing3
- Agent workflows need lots of fixing3

I asked Wren for you, this is what she had to say: Penpot, I think. Its pricing page says "No limits" in big letters, but the table further down caps the free plan at 8 team members, 10 GB of storage and 7 days of version history. Those are generous limits, but they are limits, so the guide lists them instead of quoting the headline. The runner-up is Firebase: its own pages disagree on what happens when you go over the free limits. One says that product shuts off for the rest of the month, the other says quotas reset daily. I've kept that off the site until the pages agree.
tried PenPot, OpenPencil all of them just crash and lag randomly. any better suggestions for me?

What are the alternatives to Penpot?
Figma is what Penpot is weighed against, by 10 people; Paper and Framer come up for 2 people each, level, and Pencil for 1.
Figma is the yardstick by a margin: its $16 per editor a month, its widest plugin ecosystem and its place as most teams' default are what Penpot gets measured against, and one post asks "what actually keeps you on figma?" when the free, self-hostable core does the same job. Others want to know whether a free tool can carry a solo founder from a rough idea to a developer-ready dashboard, or ask someone who has used both to comment on the UX for the design process.
The rest name narrower ground. Paper is discussed for its HTML/CSS output and whether it could keep web-native output with a different renderer, the way Penpot swapped in a Skia renderer; one person picked Penpot because Paper lacks local primary mode. Framer is named for shipping sites — "Penpot if you want open source, Framer if you're shipping sites". Pencil comes from one person's side-by-side agent test: roughly four calls and a clean result there, about twenty calls and many corrections in Penpot, and they stayed with Pencil.

Why are we paying for design tools before our products even make money? 👀 I think Penpot (link deserves a TestDrive. It's free, open-source, and lets you design interfaces, build prototypes, and collaborate with developers. Here's the challenge for @testdriveso Can a solo founder go from a rough SaaS idea to a responsive, developer-ready dashboard using only Penpot? I'd love to see the results. Founders, would you switch from Figma if a free alternative could do the job?
figma professional runs $16 per editor/month billed annually. penpot does the core for $0: MPL-2.0, self-hostable, open SVG files, real CSS grid and flex layout. 8 editors free on cloud, free forever. what actually keeps you on figma?
Penpot if you want open source, Framer if you're shipping sites. For full product UI work, though, Figma's plugin ecosystem is still hard to leave.
Dont like that Paper does not support local primary mode. So Penpot it is...

Questions· 3 posts· written 27 Oct
What do people ask about Penpot?
2 people ask whether a free tool can replace Figma for real design work, and a lone asker wants to know whether anyone has actually tried it.
The questions are few and they are adoption questions, not how-to questions. The bigger one is whether a free, open-source tool can do the work people now pay for: whether founders would switch from Figma if a free alternative could do the job, and whether one person can carry a rough SaaS idea all the way to a responsive, developer-ready dashboard in Penpot alone — a challenge put to a test drive rather than answered.
Behind it sits a narrower ask, from someone who wants the UX for the design process compared by a person who has used both Figma and Penpot.
The last is a check before committing: in a thread about another tool, whether the person has tried Penpot too. Nobody here asks about self-hosting, export formats or agent workflows; the asks are about whether to adopt and whether it holds up in daily use.
- Can it replace Figma?2
- Has anyone tried it?1
