ok sharing my free company knowledge base setup: git + obsidian + claude code every person keeps their own private vault + agent. SOUL.md USER.md AGENTS.md MEMORY.md the company KB is ONE git repo, mounted inside every vault as a submodule. my agent reads my notes and company notes in the same session. same for everyone else. 769 notes in the company KB so far. we use @obsdmd only as the UI, otherwise the vault itself is agent-agnostic, works with claude code, codex, or any harness. the personal/company boundary is held with hooks, because a rule in a markdown file gets ignored - session start hook tells the agent it's in shared territory - write guard hook runs the link checker after every edit to make sure nothing personal leaks into company vault. the agent fixes its own leak on the spot - CI runs the same check on every push - the KB ships its own .claude/ folder, so a new teammate gets every guard with zero setup one note on setting this up: never "share" your existing repo. make a fresh git repo and copy notes into it. otherwise git history remembers everything you deleted.
Obsidian on X
Enthusiasm leads: people recommend Obsidian outright and credit its recent updates, with a distinct second thread of people using the vault as shared memory for AI agents. Complaints are scattered — bugs and glitches are the largest problem theme and still a small share of the talk.

How do people feel about Obsidian?
Most people here are positive: 62 of the 99 people in this section recommend Obsidian, thank it for a feature or share how they use it. The next largest group, 26 people, is enthusiastic about something more specific: the vault as shared memory for AI agents.
Praise is broad rather than one argument. People recommend it outright — "you can't go wrong with obsidian" — and the uses are ordinary: a diary kept for years, book summaries, notes for tabletop campaigns such as Dragonbane and Fabula Ultima, a writing space an AI assistant sets up, the graph and CLI used to find orphan notes. Recent updates draw their own thanks: the Pele diagram engine for speed and clean visuals, rendering as you type, opening a single Markdown file.
The second enthusiasm is more specific: the vault as memory agents read. People point Claude, Codex, Grok and their own bots at a vault of Markdown, keep a company knowledge base in a git repo mounted inside each person's vault, or use the vault as a "handoff bus" between assistants. 8 people praise the plainer thing underneath — files they own, exportable and syncable without the paid plan.
The caveats are individual. 3 people like it but are tempted back to Notion, find the subscription expensive or say notes get bloated to audit; 3 others call it overrated or could not get used to the interface.

I am experimenting with reintroducing tagging within notes in @obsdmd, not something I have done for a long while! Never really bought this over from Roam. Trying to surface up smaller ideas and concepts than the note based tags have been offering me.
I switched from @NotionHQ to @obsdmd many months ago for my writing and AI workflow. But Notion is really starting to tempt me back…
Everything is third grade with this app, even the quick action for iOS. figuring out how to configure that is so difficult. I’ll just stick to the Apple ecosystem @obsdmd sucks.

What do people complain about with Obsidian?
There is no common complaint: bugs and glitches are the biggest theme and still only 8 people of 28. Behind them sit small clusters of 3 people each — manual installer updates, Android missing features, interface friction, and agents that ignore or flatten the vault — then single mentions.
Bugs are varied rather than one fault: a created-date property showing wrong dates after an update, colours for grouped properties missing in kanban, a theme reverting to default, hidden folders not found, a web viewer that can no longer open O'Reilly, and a macOS vault of 6,824 files that freezes the app.
Of the rest, updating means downloading and running a new installer by hand — "in 2026 is wild", one says, asking why Electron can't update itself. Android misses features that arrive on iOS, notably lock-screen voice capture, which one calls "a real gap". Interface habits grate: tab handling unlike VS Code, a daily note that opens in the wrong tab, iOS quick actions too fiddly to configure. On the AI side, pages arranged for retrieval read like an index, and one person counts bots falling back on their own memory instead of the vault about ten times a night.
Two security reports: RCEs in the desktop app, both fixed, and Windows Defender flagging the 1.14.5 installer. Also named: abandoned or broken plugins, tagging upkeep, and the web clipper pulling the app to the front.

the interface is freezing and I can no longer use it on MacOS, it simply won't open my vault anymore, which is on the same network, the app keeps trying to load all my 6824 files simultaneously.
Still confused why we need to keep installing a new installer from the website to update Electron. Is it not possible to auto update Electron via the app?
Lock Screen is the right call for voice notes. Most thoughts die in the seconds it takes to unlock and open the app, so transcribing as you speak with zero steps in between should move capture numbers a lot. Android getting skipped on this one is a real gap though.
In @obsdmd, I typically use Cmd+O to navigate between files, and I never noticed how much of a nightmare this was because of the way that Obsidian handles tab-handling, which is not at all the way that IDEs like VSCode handle it, which is what I'm used to.
I think the one obstacle I run into most frequently is bots defaulting to their memory rather than using the @obsdmd Vault / Second Brain I have setup. I am running a check every night to capture exceptions to the set rules and finding about 10 exceptions each night where @bot defaults to its memory rather than vault. @MichaelHyatt

What are the alternatives to Obsidian?
Notion is the comparison that matters: 7 of 16 people weigh Obsidian against it, in both directions. The rest of the field is one or two people each, and those are arrivals from another tool rather than departures.
With Notion the traffic runs both ways, and AI is the reason. One person moved months ago for writing and an AI workflow and is "tempted back"; another is moving notes to Notion because it "has a connector my agents can plug straight into", with no installs or sync to fight. Against that, someone says the combination of Obsidian and their own agent is "miles ahead" of Notion's built-in AI, and another has the same agent saving to Obsidian instead of Notion. Notion is also named alongside Obsidian as a fine Markdown second brain.
The rest of the field is arrivals, each a single voice unless noted. From Evernote: twenty years ended over the subscription price and worry about lock-in, with Markdown export the draw. From Roam Research: someone wanting an offline alternative in 2020, and another who followed Roam with Obsidian. From Reflect: thousands of Markdown notes moved over. Others weigh Logseq (an interface they preferred, before it moved off plain Markdown files), Bear, Scrivener for manuscripts, Things for tasks, and Zed.

I love @obsdmd. But my whole workflow runs through AI assistants now, so I'm moving all my notes to @NotionHQ. The reason is boring: Notion has a connector my agents can plug straight into. No installs, no fighting with Obsidian sync. Not forever, just testing it. A bit scared, lowkey excited.
I switched from @NotionHQ to @obsdmd many months ago for my writing and AI workflow. But Notion is really starting to tempt me back…
Another dying app: @NotionHQ. The @obsdmd + my AI agent of choice is miles ahead. For all companies out there trying to push an AI-ish feature to boost revenue: I DON'T WANT TO USE YOUR AI. I want to use MY AGENT with your service.

I couldn’t get used to obsidian interface, and LogSeq was awesome till the time they changed storage to db from md files

Questions· 24 posts· written 27 Oct
What do people ask about Obsidian?
How to switch something on or adjust it is the biggest question theme, from 9 of 24 people: Liquid Glass, readable line length, editor font on iOS, Mermaid and diagram CSS, excluding a folder from search, dictating into Quick Capture. Platform, pairing, AI and sync questions follow in smaller numbers.
The configuration questions are small and practical, often about the newest release: how to turn on Liquid Glass, how to adjust readable line length, how to enlarge the editor font on iOS without scaling the whole app, whether Mermaid rendering through the new Pele engine can be styled separately for a light theme, and where the documentation for a feature is. One asks how to exclude a directory from search. Another asks whether dictated text can go into Quick Capture hands-free while driving.
Platform questions are about reach: whether there is a phone app, when Android gets it, whether it runs on Arch Linux. 3 people ask what to pair with the vault — Readwise/Readwise Reader is the setup one has paid for over years. 3 ask how to connect AI, including whether a bot can be hooked up and whether retrieval quality holds up with a large vault. 2 ask about reaching a vault on other devices: sync through Google Drive, or a vault on an SMB share from the iPad. Single questions: what Catalyst is, when Bases reaches Publish, and whether Pele's 500x figure includes layout time.

Wait how do I get the Liquid Glass on?
Is there a way to increase the editor font without blowing up the entire app font in @obsdmd for iOS? I remember it was possible, an you can in macOS. 🤔
@obsdmd on iOS is there a way to dump dictated text into a Quick Capture? seems like no, but one of my main imagined use cases for Quick Capture was jotting down thoughts hands-free while driving…
When for android?
@obsdmd @kepano when will we be able to connect our @bot to obsidian like this?

What do people want from Obsidian?
No wish is asked by more than two people: six themes are level at two people each — voice capture on Android, opening single Markdown files directly, a kanban view for Bases, an official MCP for agents, one-step quick capture on mobile, and easier, prettier diagrams. The rest are one person each.
Android voice capture is asked for by two people who want the lock-screen capture that arrived on iOS, one arguing that thoughts "die in the seconds it takes to unlock". Two want an "Open with" entry that opens a single Markdown file without copying it into a vault, because a lot of Markdown now lives in repos. Two want a kanban view for Bases.
Two want an official connection for agents so bots can reach the vault without "hack solutions"; an online MCP for Sync subscribers is one ask. Two want one-step quick capture on phones, including dictating straight into it. Two want diagrams that are easier to look up and prettier to look at, rather than all black-and-white.
The rest are one person each: PDF export and working system notifications on iOS, vaults on an SMB share from the iPad, the editor as a VS Code extension, CLI support, saving voice recordings for later transcription, charts pasted from chat apps, day-one support for new devices like the Duo, and a rewrite in Rust.

Editing Markdown outside the vault is the big one. A lot of Markdown now lives in repos (READMEs, docs, agent instruction files), and not having to copy it into a vault to use a good editor removes real friction.
My feed is full of this.. I would really love to see an online MCP for @obsdmd Sync subscribers, so we don't have to hack solutions to connect our agents to Obsidian. 🙏

We need an awesome skill for it to be able to make more graphically appealing ones, I told an associate to use it for his red team green team. He was having trouble getting his agent to do more than black-and-white.
