I would suggest never running PPC ads without having at least a couple of AB tests running in the background. We use Mixpanel to run the A/B tests but you can use any other software like Posthog, etc. This is super important because it makes the ad spend give you a lot more data and also improve your conversions over time.
Mixpanel on X
The talk about Mixpanel is mostly people saying it works for them — funnels, drop-off and A/B tests, with a few hundred dollars a month counted as money well spent. The counter-current is smaller: PostHog's free tier, the startup year's renewal bill, and MCP and AI chat trouble.

How do people feel about Mixpanel?
Most of the talk is positive: 18 of the section's 20 people say Mixpanel works for them and they would recommend it, mainly for funnels, drop-off and A/B tests. 2 people have soured — one switched to PostHog, one is leaving over features locked behind paid plans.
Happy users treat it as their default analytics tool and describe it working without fuss: funnels that show where users drop off, cohort data, and A/B test variants tracked as the source of truth for attribution and the customer journey. Ad buyers recommend wiring every funnel step into it before spending on campaigns. Mobile comes up too — funnels for users who are not signed in, iOS and Android support, and a free tier to start on. One user pays a few hundred dollars a month and calls that "pennies at our scale"; another rates the AI chat as a huge improvement on the product.
Two people complain instead. One says they switched to PostHog; one says Mixpanel served them well but the data features they need sit behind premium plans that are not worth it at their scale.

All in on Mixpanel. It costs a few hundred dollars a month, which is honestly pennies at our scale, and it works perfectly so I don't see any reason to change it.
Why not just use something like Mixpanel? It's much simpler than Posthog, and more stable to it. I agree building internal tools is cool nowadays, and it might even serve your purpose if you're starting small. But over time, it can get super messy.
mixpanel funnel dropoff shows the exact spot where users pause and open discord instead
AI chat in Mixpanel is the easiest 100x product improvement I’ve seen

What do people complain about with Mixpanel?
Complaints are spread across 21 posts and no single gripe dominates: price is the biggest at 5 people, with setup weight, AI and MCP trouble and numbers people can't trust level behind at 3, 3 and 3 people each.
Price is the biggest complaint, and it is about the bill more than the product: one posts that the free startup year ends in a $15,000 renewal, another counts Mixpanel inside a stack that runs $1,000+ a month, and a third leaves because the features they need are behind premium plans.
Setup weight, AI trouble and shaky numbers are level behind. One person wants a simple drop-off dashboard without spending hours in Mixpanel; a solo developer stopped tracking attribution altogether, calling it "a hard job". The MCP connector keeps logging one user out and is "annoying to use"; another asks the company to fix it because it blocks using a bot for everything. The built-in chat is judged shallow on retention questions next to PostHog's AI or Claude. On numbers, raw exports repeat events, live tables move between reads hours apart, and small parameter tweaks skew cohorts after month three.
Then chart limits — caps on charts and boards, visualisations harder to build than PostHog's, geography only down to country and city — and one list of breaches says names and emails leaked through the vendor.
- Pricey plans5
- AI chat and MCP trouble5
- Charts and data limits4
- Heavy to set up and use3
- Tracked numbers you can't trust3
- Vendor breach exposed data1

Mixpanel gives you a year on their "free" startup plan but you need to pay $15k afterwards to keep using it 🤣
14/ The math: Zapier + HubSpot + Mixpanel + Calendly + Typeform + Intercom ≈ $1,000+/mo for a small team. Open-source stack on a $20 VPS ≈ $20/mo. That’s not a discount. That’s a different business model.
okayyy Curious about that, im using mixpanel myself, and usually i dont find many issues w it What was better in it? most of the stuff for me just works out fine, maybe its a bit harder to make those visualisations, but for the mcp, i might be interested more in that, as with mixpanel idfk why, but it keeps logging me out, and its just annoying to use its mcp
@mixpanel I'm not sure of how I'd improve. It's a lot to do with the responses of the chat when you ask questions, and not related to UI/UX of it. If I ask it to go deep into a retention metric, it might just look at surface level stuff. But, Posthog AI or Claude with Mixpanel MCP would actually go much deeper to uncover a better answer. Does that make sense?
Data visualization is free, UI/UX is more intuitive, posthog MCP is goated. Biggest factor was data visualization. Mixpanel has a board limit

What are the alternatives to Mixpanel?
PostHog is the rival people weigh: 3 of the section's 7 people name it, several by switching to it or recommending it against Mixpanel. 2 people talk about leaving for their own setup, and single posts each set Google Analytics and Cloudflare against Mixpanel.
PostHog is the comparison that comes up most, and it comes with specifics: a free tier people call better than Mixpanel's, free data visualisation, an MCP one user calls "goated", and a startup programme compared side by side with Mixpanel's year free. The loudest post is a switch — "Switched from Mixpanel to Posthog and holy shit it's 100x better" — and another user still on Mixpanel for basic user behaviour says so many people recommend PostHog that they will try it right away. Not all of it points one way: one user using PostHog says it does not seem much more complicated than Mixpanel, and Mixpanel is still recommended elsewhere on the page as the simpler, more stable option.
Two people plan their own route out: one will build a system on Cloudflare rather than pay for premium plans, and one advises checking the export path before month twelve so a move off is "a weekend job". Google Analytics is set against Mixpanel once, GA for where visitors come from and Mixpanel for what happens inside the app; one post distrusts Cloudflare's visitor counts as inflated next to Mixpanel or Google.

Switched from Mixpanel to Posthog and holy shit it's 100x better
using Mixpanel for basic user behavior rn, but so many people recommend PostHog. gonna try it right away
I just use the Dashboards and Activity tab for now it doesnt seem that more complicated than Mixpanel Data visualization is free in PH
Mixpanel has served me well, but I'm about to just build out my own system onto of CloudFlare and be done with it. I never touch their UI, and the data features I need are behind premium plans that are not worth it at my scale.

Questions· 4 posts from 3 people· written 27 Oct
What do people ask about Mixpanel?
Questions are few: 3 people ask 4 things, and 2 of them want to know what someone tracked in Mixpanel before they left and why. The rest ask whether it can show which older post converts, and whether it can show what users actually stick with.
The most common question, from 2 people, follows someone out the door: what were you tracking in Mixpanel before you switched, and why are you no longer using it. One asks it of a user who had just moved to PostHog, the other of someone who had stopped.
The other two are capability questions, one person each. One asks whether Mixpanel can show which old post converts, and one whether it can show what actually sticks — retention, asked in plain words. No posts answer them.

What do people want from Mixpanel?
One person wants more from the built-in AI chat: asked to go deep into a retention metric, they say it only looks at surface-level things, and PostHog's AI or Claude working through the Mixpanel MCP go deeper.
The wish is about answer depth, not the interface: the same person says the problem is "a lot to do with the responses of the chat when you ask questions, and not related to UI/UX of it". They contrast the built-in chat with PostHog's AI and with Claude connected through the Mixpanel MCP, which they say dig deeper for a better answer.
