Across 160 posts from 149 people, the talk about JetBrains is split between affection for its IDEs and attention to its AI push — the open Mellum2.1 model and the new ThinkRail agentic IDE — with a smaller, steady stream of longtime users saying they are opening the IDEs less.

How do people feel about JetBrains?
Praise for the IDEs is the biggest strand (29 people), with optimism about the AI push close behind (26). A smaller group says it uses JetBrains less or has left (17), and enthusiasm for the new ThinkRail agentic IDE (16) sits just behind that.
Longtime users praise the IDEs as the reason they stay: one has used JetBrains tools for 21 years, another says the warnings in GoLand, WebStorm and DataGrip stand in for code review on a one-person team, a third keeps IDEA open to navigate a large, interconnected system alongside an agent. Free student licences are a recurring draw.
The AI push has almost as many backers (26 people). The recurring subject is the open Mellum2.1 model, described as 12B parameters with 2.5B active, Apache 2.0, trained with reinforcement learning inside real repositories, and the Copilot "Fix" button inside JetBrains IDEs. Some expect JetBrains to win AI coding with small local models.
Leaving is quieter (17): subscriptions lapsing after 13 or 14 years, IDEs unopened for months, a team lead finding a third of the team had not opened a JetBrains product in a year. 16 people are enthusiastic about ThinkRail's git worktree per task and living SPEC.md files; 8 write the company off as outdated because, one says, heyday heavy IDEs are no longer needed.

🔗 link #AICoding #OpenSource #AgenticIDE
I am *struggling* on my JetBrains renewal coming up. I've had this grandfathered-in, All Products pack at a discount since they went subscription-only. It used to be that I always had RubyMine, WebStorm, and Rider open. And then a handful of others used throughout the month. But
I haven't renewed my @jetbrains subscription this year; it has been going on for last 13-14 years. I love their products, and been a (free) user since 2003. The current workflow doesn't require me editing code in their beautiful IDEs.
📉 Time to pivot bro, heavy IDE's just aren't needed by most devs anymore, it's unfortunately over. it was a good run!

What do people complain about with JetBrains?
The two loudest complaints are level: what the subscription costs (6 people) and how heavy the IDEs run (6). Things breaking (5) comes next.
On price, a user with a grandfathered All Products pack is torn over the renewal and renews one more year only because they love the tools; someone who prepaid three years before a price rise now leaves GoLand unopened for months; a company was emailed that its IntelliJ Ultimate subscription would no longer exist; a founder estimates a Junie workflow at retail API rates would cost about $1000 a month against $200 for a Claude Max plan.
On weight, RubyMine and WebStorm "burning 300-800% CPU" leave a laptop hot and a battery dead, IntelliJ and CLion struggle next to a browser and Spotify on 16 GB of RAM, and one user compares Rider with nvim.
Crashes follow (5): an IDE that freezes and "can't handle a large app", 400% CPU while an agent builds, a third reinstall in a year, a terminal pane that will not stick, Air's desktop app failing to launch. Plugins break for 4: Copilot stopped working when an October update dropped IDE 2025.1 support, and AI Assistant misbehaves in Android Studio.
- Subscription cost and renewals7
- Heavy on CPU and RAM6
- Crashes and things breaking5
- Plugins and AI extensions break4
- Doubt about living specs4
- Benchmarks are vendor self-reported4

I think this months renewal of my JetBrains licenses will finally be the last one. I'm so fucking tired of RubyMine and WebStorm just burning 300-800% CPU for no fucking reason, running my laptop hot and destroying my battery. I miss the old JetBrains.

We have been using intellij in the company forever, now we got the email that the ultimate subscription wont be a thing anymore, hundred of users gone with a single email. Personally, I can’t remember when it was the last time I opened it, and I am sure same for others
Not really when the IDE constantly freezes, can’t handle a large app, and runs 400% CPU when an agent Builds.

What are the alternatives to JetBrains?
VS Code is the comparison that comes up most, well ahead of the rest (9 people); Claude Code is next (3). The remainder are small head-to-heads, one or two people each: Zed, Neovim and Vim, Antigravity, Cursor, Codex, Emacs, Orca and the Claude Max plan.
VS Code is weighed mainly on price and weight: it is free and endlessly extensible, while a JetBrains IDE costs money and, as one puts it, JetBrains IDEs "r heavier than vsc". A widely shared post asks why senior engineers still pay for a JetBrains IDE when VS Code is free, and another revives the older debate of PyCharm against a VS Code or Cursor setup with Ruff and Pyright. Others say they have stopped using the JetBrains suite and do everything in VS Code, or keep JetBrains for work without AI.
Claude Code (3) is what people drop the suite for: one uninstalled the whole JetBrains bundle after switching to it, another asks how long it has been since anyone opened a traditional IDE. A counterpoint in the same theme: Claude Code has an official JetBrains plugin that brings the same diff review into the IDE.
The rest are level at one or two people. Zed, Neovim and Vim, and Google's Antigravity get two each; Cursor, Codex, Emacs, Orca and a Claude Max plan one. One Emacs user of 25 years now uses JetBrains more; a JetBrains fan of nearly 20 years wishes JetBrains had built Orca.

- Claude Code3
- Zed2
- Neovim and Vim2
- Antigravity2

The longer you look at this "Best IDEs" chart, the worse it gets. Whoever designed this template clearly copy-pasted the top row labels onto the bottom row without running a single unit test! Once you get past C++ using the JS logo and TypeScript somehow mapping to Ruby and RubyMine, there is still one genuine debate left in the top middle column: For Python development in 2026, do you still prefer a dedicated heavy IDE like JetBrains PyCharm out of the box, or a lightweight setup with VS Code / Cursor + Ruff and Pyright? Bonus test for keen eyes: how many total label and typo bugs can you spot across all 10 columns? Drop your count and your favorite Python editor below!
If VS Code is free and endlessly extensible, why do so many senior engineers still pay for a JetBrains IDE?

Questions· 17 posts· written 27 Oct
What do people ask about JetBrains?
The biggest question is whether you can bring your own AI subscription into Air, AI Assistant or Junie (5 people). Behind it, two are level: how ThinkRail holds up in practice (3) and why pay for JetBrains at all (3).
On bringing your own subscription, the asks are specific: does bring-your-own-subscription work with any provider or only the ones JetBrains integrates with, and when will a Claude Code subscription work inside Air or AI Assistant. Someone at a startup prices the gap: 240 AI credits a year for $100 was the reason to hold an AI Pro subscription, but at retail API rates a Junie workflow compares badly with a Claude 20x Max plan at $200 a month.
On ThinkRail, people want to know what to check before a first session — whether it fills a large repo with features nobody asked for, whether context piles up once workspaces are isolated, and whether a contract change that skips SPEC.md gets caught in review.
The "why pay" question is asked plainly: if VS Code is free and endlessly extensible, why do senior engineers still pay? Whether the IDE will still make sense in two years (2) and what breaks first when self-hosting the open model — memory, concurrency, or tests that still fail (2) — are each asked by two people. One wants to know where to buy tokens to run the open model without the hardware.
- Can I use my own AI subscription?5
- How does ThinkRail hold up in practice?3
- Why pay for this at all?3
- Will the IDE still make sense?2
- What trips up self-hosting?2
- Where can I run the open model?1

Whats stopping you from using Antigravity IDE Extensions? I want to know what you feel like is missing from the VSCode, XCode, Zed, and Jetbrains plugin
Still waiting for when claude code subs can be used with AIR or AI Assistant 🙏
Thanks for the replies, Mikhail. I suppose from my perspective, as a startup, the value in the JetBrains AI subscription was being able to get 240 AI credits a year for $100 USD. That was a compelling reason to have an AI Pro subscription. Junie Lite is a nice initiative for

Wishes· 7 posts· written 27 Oct
What do people want from JetBrains?
Each of the seven wishes comes from one person, so none leads. Among them: an agent status indicator in Air, a home screen that picks your next ticket and agent, and a JetBrains that keeps AI assistive.
The asks are concrete. One Air user wants an indicator for multiple running agents, because the current "Running" label does not confirm what they are doing. Another, calling the IDE their daily tool and its strength the tooling, wants the home screen to suggest which Jira or YouTrack tickets to start and which configured agent suits them.
Two are about keeping the developer in charge. One hopes JetBrains sides with developers and keeps the assistant to helping out of a block, since "no LLM is writing my code without strict supervision". Another wants an agent-era IDE that keeps JetBrains editor power inside the harness — installing magit, for instance — or else an editor forked and rebuilt around agents.
Smaller ones: a font-zoom feature, more built-in fold defaults like the File Nesting plugin, and Mellum reaching other editors — an updated VS Code extension for fill-in-the-middle completions, so a locally hosted Mellum 2 can be used there.
- Agent status in Air1
- Side with developers on AI1
- Tickets and agents on the home screen1
- Font zoom1
- File Nesting-style fold defaults1
- Mellum in other editors1

@jetbrains In, Air, could you please add an indicator for multiple running agents. The current “Running” label doesn’t confirm activity. Showing agent status and actions would help.
The IDE is my Daily Tool number one. Intellij strengh is tooling, in combination with local or cloude llms it could do so much more: Homescreen: wich Jira/youtrack Tickets should i / my teammates start today, and why (Blockers etc)? Which configured Agent could be the best for it
I was hoping JetNrains would side with the devs... Now, I love me an assistant which can help me out of a block, or give suggestions. But no LLM is writing my code without strict supervision, thank you.
For ADE, I am expecting: - Either to use Emacs/Vim/JetBrains IDE capabilities in harness tool inside. I mean, it should allow me to install and use magit for example. - Or, fork an editor but drop or modify all the capabilities for making the editor agentic development tool.
我还用idea的时候就一直想让jetbrains出一个放大字体的功能。可惜,现在用不上了。
