Gemini CLI on X

Gemini CLI draws measured praise as a useful terminal agent, and as many people praise it plainly as say Antigravity has replaced it. The tangle of near-identical names — Gemini CLI, Antigravity CLI, Gemini API CLI — is the biggest complaint and the biggest question people arrive with.

How do people feel about Gemini CLI?

The largest group, 15 of the 33 people in the section, speaks well of Gemini CLI without superlatives: useful, a "fair pick", or good on one specific count. Plain strong praise and claims that it has been replaced are level at 7 and 7 people each, and 4 call it a disappointment.

The largest group praises without superlatives. They name it as the terminal agent they would pick next, describe it doing real work — building reports from a typst template, calling a remote MCP endpoint without writing wrappers — and single out small design choices, like a ctrl+Y toggle for yolo mode. Its free tier is described as generous, with a daily request cap. One notes the README saying it is not optimised for the newest Gemini models.

The enthusiastic group goes further: they say it works well, that they keep using it, and one calls it a tool you install and never go back from, with code reading, file edits, commands and MCP extensions.

Level with them are those who say it is gone or closed off: that Antigravity replaced it, that free access for individuals stopped in June, that the sign-in ended, and that its GitHub page now points elsewhere. A disappointed few say it got "left behind" by rivals, call it embarrassing next to other tools, or report hearing it is useless.

之前 Google 有一个项目叫 Gemini CLI(你可以理解这是一个编码 agent,已经被目前的 antigravity 取代)。

Google finally stuffed Gemini into the terminal. Gemini CLI is the official open-source terminal agent: reading code, editing files, running commands, all without leaving the command line — plus MCP support for extensions. The free tier is pretty generous too. If you live in the terminal, this is one of those tools you install and never go back from. #AI #Gemini link

Use gemini in antigravity with the humanizer skill I have been using gemini from gemini cli time to use it to make reports, me and my friends even made a typst template to streamline it instead of using word latex engine was too slow for us while doing proofreading and edits :)

What do people complain about with Gemini CLI?

The biggest complaint, from 9 of the 27 people in the section, is naming: people cannot tell Gemini CLI, Antigravity CLI and Gemini API CLI apart, or work out what replaced what. Security and credential risks are next at 7 people; the other complaints are small, a few people each.

On naming, people list the overlapping products — Gemini CLI, Antigravity Agent, Antigravity IDE, Antigravity CLI (agy), Gemini API CLI, Gemini Desktop — and ask which one to install next year. A developer worries a script written for agy today may not be recognised tomorrow, and one joke is that Google's renaming department has hit its targets.

Security is the second group, 7 people: a zero-day (CVE-2026-31478) that runs commands from a poisoned context file with no confirmation prompt, plaintext credentials and .env files left in local session logs, an audit finding its policy enforcer failing open, its reported use as a hacking agent, and a bypass a researcher says they reported to Google.

The rest are small. A hooks migration copied Claude's seconds into Gemini's milliseconds, so a 30s hook became 30ms. Session logs cite a line 173 in a 72-line file. Untrusted folders skipped project settings and could save an empty view back. Others hit the daily request cap, get server congestion, lost goose access after the move, or report one task eating millions of tokens and the whole credit balance.

‼️ ‼ A zero-day in Gemini CLI (CVE-2026-31478) is being exploited in the wild right now, and it lets an attacker run commands on your machine and steal your credentials. The Gemini CLI is the terminal tool that connects Google's Gemini model to your files and shell, the same

If you moved Claude Code hooks to Gemini CLI with gemini hooks migrate --from-claude, check the timeouts. Claude counts seconds, Gemini counts milliseconds, and the migration copied the number as is. A 30s hook got 30ms. Fixed in the Oct 24 nightly. Stable doesn't have it yet.

I JUST FOUND OUT WHY PEOPLE HATE GEMINI 4 ARGON.... I thought people were exaggerating… So I decided to test it myself. I gave Argon a simple coding task that took around 11 minutes It burned through ~4 MILLION tokens 😭 So I gave the exact same task to Claude Opus 5.5

Gemini CLI ignores project settings in an untrusted folder, but a command could still save that empty view back and wipe the file. Now they stay read-only until you trust it. Not loaded is not empty. link

What are the alternatives to Gemini CLI?

No single rival dominates: Antigravity, Codex and OpenHands are level at 2, 2 and 2 people each in a section of 9. Two comparisons carry the most reach — that Antigravity lifts the same model's scores where Gemini CLI held it back, and that rivals stay in scope far more often.

The Antigravity comparison is a harness argument: a widely shared post reports Gemini 4 Argon scoring 33% on Bug Hunt Bench in Gemini CLI and 40.7% on Antigravity's harness, and rising from 40% to a reported 54% on another bench. One team calls Antigravity with Argon "a huge improvement" over Gemini CLI, saying it found material issues other models missed.

The scope comparison runs the other way for Gemini CLI: research highlighted in posts puts out-of-scope actions at 5.4–27.7% for Claude Code, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI, against 0.2–4.5% for OpenHands.

Against Codex, one person sets up a head-to-head run of the same prompt, and another lays out the tradeoff: Codex has a sandbox and a log but no approval prompt for every shell command, while Gemini CLI asks first but runs without an OS sandbox. One person's two high-reach posts say Claude Opus finished a task for far fewer tokens after Gemini CLI burned $10 of credits. Others name omp after saying Gemini CLI is gone, or suggest plain browser Gemini, which hands you commands to run yourself.

Gemini 4 Argon looked like a #3 model. Turns out the harness was holding it back. On FrontierCS 2 it scored 40% with the Pi harness, behind GPT-6 Astra (44%) and Opus 5.5 (58%). Someone audited the traces: Pi was killing ~20% of Argon's runs early on fallbacks. Rerun on Google's Antigravity harness, it reportedly jumps to 54%. Ahead of Astra, right behind Opus. Same story on Bug Hunt Bench: 33 → 40.7 just by switching from Gemini CLI to Antigravity. And way cheaper per run. Meanwhile a dev got repeated "interfering with services" warnings from Google and quit the tool. So: 1. You're not benchmarking a model. You're benchmarking model + harness. 2. Smartest on paper != reliable for your needs link

Smarter coding agents aren’t necessarily better at staying within scope. Research highlighted by The New Stack found out-of-scope action rates of 5.4–27.7% for Claude Code, Codex CLI & Gemini CLI vs. 0.2–4.5% for OpenHands. The harness matters.

Three tied at 2 of 3, and they split differently. Codex has the sandbox and the log but no approval prompt on every shell command. Gemini CLI and Aider ask before shell commands but run without an OS sandbox. Your funnel point fits: each one dropped the piece that costs the most

GEMINI 4 ARGON JUST BURNED $10 ON ONE CODING TASK 💀 And somehow people still call it “cheaper” than other frontier models. I thought they were exaggerating… So I tested it myself. I gave Argon a simple coding task that took around 11 minutes. It used ~4 MILLION tokens 😭 h

@antigravity @GoogleDeepMind Antigravity + Gemini 4 Argon is a huge improvement over Gemini CLI + Gemini Pro 3.1. In one instance we ran adversarial reviews with Opus 5.5 xhigh, Astra-6 xhigh, and Antigravity + Argo was able to find and fix material findings both models missed.

What do people ask about Gemini CLI?

The biggest question, from 4 of the 12 people in the section, is which CLI to install: people ask whether Gemini CLI and Gemini API CLI are different, and which one to launch for a job. Next, 3 people ask what happened to Gemini CLI — whether it still exists and still gets updates.

On the CLI question, the plainest version is "I don't understand, whether Gemini CLI and Gemini API CLI is different?" Others list the options and ask for one answer: to launch an agent, is it gemini CLI, gemini api, antigravity CLI or a cloud agent? One reply explains the split as Gemini CLI being the agent and the API CLI being the tool an agent drives, and another notes the GitHub page now sends you to Antigravity for the newest model.

The second group asks what happened: is it still there or not, did it stop getting updates, and what was the point of moving it to Antigravity and then back to Gemini.

Smaller questions, two people each: whether coding with the newest model needs an Ultra plan and Antigravity or runs in the CLI headless, and whether other agents can call it cleanly — whether Claude Code and Codex already do, and whether its session API is stable enough for other tools to read.

Smart lane. Beating Claude Code/Codex on the harness is a long fight; letting other agents pull Gemini multimodal is leverage. Do Claude Code / Codex already call Gemini CLI cleanly, or is it still Gemini-native only?

What do people want from Gemini CLI?

The whole section is one ask, from 2 people of 2: that Google stop renaming its CLIs, keep the documentation working and publish one place that says which one to install.

The two posts want the same thing in different words. One asks Google to release a website that navigates its product suite, so people can at least follow the releases. The other mocks the sequence of names — gemini cli, agy cli, gemini-api cli — as three generations that don't recognise each other, suggests calling it cli-cli so the name is at least honest, and notes that developers' documentation links keep returning 404s.

There is no other wish in the posts filed here: nothing about features, speed, price or models.
