Captions on X

The conversation is praise with specifics: 19 people single out HDR that holds through titles and effects, 10 come for grading they never got around to, and 22 recommend it outright. Complaints are barely present — one tester's After Effects export still comes out empty.

How do people feel about Captions?

The reception is positive: 22 people post plain praise or recommend it to others, and 19 name one specific win — HDR that holds through titles, graphics and effects. 5 are still figuring it out or not convinced.

The largest group, 22 people, posts short praise and recommends it to others by name; one credits two 100k videos they did not edit, another calls it an "absolute monster". Next come 19 people describing the same gap: an HDR clip pops, then titles and graphics on top look "flat and gray". They say the agent now builds type, effects and animation in HDR inside one project, with every layer left editable.

10 people value staying in control: directing in ChatGPT or Claude in plain English or from reference videos, then opening the result in Premiere or After Effects to polish the last part themselves. 10 come for grading — describe the look, curves, masks, shot matching — often on log footage they never got round to fixing. 5 are not won over: one found it less intuitive than expected and went back to ChatGPT.

Anyone who’s cut HDR knows the real pain isn’t the footage The clip pops. Then you drop titles and graphics on top and they look flat and gray next to it With Tesseract by @trymirage, the rest of the comp finally keeps up. Your agent builds the type, graphics and effects in

Same footage. Three completely different moods. I used the Tesseract skill from @trymirage in Codex to colour grade these PRMPT clips, then build a beat-synced sequence showing the before/afters. For me, the main appeal is being able to direct the look in plain English, with

I have tesseract installed…maybe I just need to work with it more? Idk, it just didn’t feel as intuitive as I’d anticipated. But you know what? Maybe ChatGPT might be the move for now. Thanks for the heads up!

What do people complain about with Captions?

One tester accounts for all 4 posts here: on real After Effects projects, importing into Tesseract lost text and whole scenes and exporting back to After Effects gave an empty composition every time. Two weeks later the import is much better, but the export still comes out empty.

This is a single voice, from a builder who says they are making a motion video product themselves, so it is the account of 1 tester rather than a pattern.

They ran the tool on four real After Effects projects. Importing into Tesseract lost text and whole scenes on three of four, and exporting back to After Effects gave an empty comp every time, all black; on three the exporter dropped the root group with everything inside. They offered logs and offered to test new builds, and were gracious about it being early.

Across 4 posts in the theme, they report movement: after an update the import is "way better", the scenes finally show up. The export back to After Effects still comes out empty on all four projects.

tested it on 4 real After Effects projects. importing into Tesseract lost text and whole scenes on 3 of 4. exporting back to AE gave an empty comp every time, all black. on 3 of them the exporter drops the root group with everything inside. happy to share the logs.

all good, you said upfront it's early and results might not be exact. I'm building a motion video product myself and run into the same AE file conversion problems, so I get how hard this is. happy to send the logs or test new builds. good luck with it!

What are the alternatives to Captions?

The largest group here, 2 people, comes from DaVinci Resolve, for grading they never got around to. The rest is level: Palmier, Illustrator and Photoshop, and Runway are each named by one person.

The biggest comparison is DaVinci Resolve, with 2 people. One describes shooting in log because a YouTuber said it looked cinematic, finding the footage "grey and dead", opening Resolve and closing it again, and now trying Tesseract to get an agent to grade the shots by describing the look. Another, replying, says DaVinci tutorials "just became a lot less necessary".

The other three are one person each, each weighing it differently. One recommends it alongside Palmier Pro as AI-first editing tools you can vibe direct with, working alongside agents. A French-speaking reply keeps a place for Illustrator and Photoshop: still useful, still necessary. One reply names it with Runway when asked which tools to use, pairing rather than replacing.

Questions· 19 posts from 16 people· written 27 Oct

What do people ask about Captions?

People ask how far it really goes — whether they can edit the result themselves, if it works for every kind of video, and whether pacing and frame-accurate cutting hold up. The next ask is where to learn it: tutorials and step-by-step guides.

The largest set, 5 people, asks about capability: can I edit it for real, is it only for launch and motion graphic videos or any video, does it understand that not all silences are bad, can it cut with frame-by-frame accuracy, does type hold when comped as a tracked plate — and, seeing a good result, "sure this wasn't made using AE right?"

4 ask where to learn: step-by-step guides, a tutorial on using Tesseract, detailed breakdowns beyond the docs ("I need more than what your docs are"), and who has the best workflows for making many ads.

4 ask what else it takes to run it: whether Tesseract alone is enough, whether it works in Claude Code, where the Claude plugin is, and whether the plus or Astra is doing the work. 2 ask whether HDR survives once text and effects are added; 2 whether it replaces tools they already use.

Y'all got any detailed breakdowns anywhere? Because just the other day, I was saying to myself "man, I wish there was a tutorial or something showing how they made that launch video!!" That would be *thee* most useful thing ever! Because I need more than what your docs are

Wishes· 8 posts from 7 people· written 27 Oct

What do people want from Captions?

The only wish more than one person makes is more places to run it — a Grok plugin, a Captions MCP, the Claude plugin (3 people). Everything else is one person each: a reusable VFX library, an import report, 50fps and 59.94fps exports, and paying without recurring charges.

The wish with more than one voice is reach into other agents: 3 people want it in more places — someone waiting for "the captions mcp", someone asking where "the claude plugin gang" is, someone asking for a Tesseract plugin in Grok bot.

The remaining wishes are each one person's. One asks for a public database of reusable VFX code and tool kits on GitHub, "not just skills", and later for mix-and-match so people can build things nobody has made yet — the theme's 2 posts are both theirs. One asks whether the converter flags effects it cannot preserve, wanting an import report before letting an agent edit an existing project. One asks about export support for 50fps and 59.94fps. One, praising the grading, asks for a way to pay for long-term use without automatic charges.

  • Plugins for more agents3
  • A reusable library of VFX and tool kits2
  • An import report before the agent edits1
  • 50fps and 59.94fps exports1
  • Paying without recurring charges1

building reusable tool kits for motion design with tesseract makes the workflow for video editing insanely easy anyway you can start holding a database of reusable code on github or something for the vfx you guys are building ? not just skills ?
