Speechify turns any PDF book into an audiobook for about 130 a year. I don't read books, my attention span won't let me, but I can listen while I work or do chores. It even has Snoop Dogg and John Rhys-Davies voices. #AI #Productivity
Speechify on X
Speechify's talk is mostly practical praise from people who listen to PDFs, books and textbooks instead of reading them, with price as the recurring objection: 5 of the 29 people filing complaints call the subscription too expensive, and some of those rate the app highly.

How do people feel about Speechify?
Most of the talk comes from people who are happy with it for listening rather than reading: 15 of 21 describe using it on PDFs, textbooks and documents, and 6 go further and say they now rely on it.
Users describe loading a PDF, a Google Doc or a textbook and having it read aloud while they walk on a walking pad, work or do chores, and one says they follow the text with their eyes while it reads. A parent says it reads photographed pages aloud to a son in high school who reads at junior-high level. One recommends it for research, text to speech and speech to text, and calls the week's trial worth it; another plans exam revision by having PDFs summarised and pushing the summary into Speechify. What people praise most concretely is voice choice: Snoop Dogg and John Rhys-Davies are both named, and one writer uses John Rhys-Davies as the preferred voice for their own fiction.
The 6 people in the rave theme go further. One says it "changed my life" as a writer to hear their own work read back, another bought it and now finds long-form reading hard without it, and one is delighted at a voice reading firefighting standards through a dry book.

Served how? What can we really do besides commit to giving them more time and practice with reading and writing? I am genuinely asking… also got my son Speechify to help him when I can’t. I have him reading a lot, he’s in high school, but reading at a junior high level.
Speechify turns any PDF or Google Doc into an audiobook. I just upload the file and it reads it out loud. The voices sound really decent too. Great way to turn reading time into listening time. #AI #Productivity
Speechify had literally changed my life as a writer. Putting my work in it and letting it read it back to me is a BLESSING
Same thing. I even bought Speechify just for this. Right now I'm already having a hard time reading long-form content without Speechify. This is sad

What do people complain about with Speechify?
Price is the complaint people raise most: 5 of 8 say the subscription costs too much, and 3 report the text itself coming out wrong.
The price posts give figures: $129 a year, a subscription someone who lost their job decided to replace with a free version they built themselves, and almost R$ 400 for premium from a user who calls it the best and still cannot justify paying it. A developer is preparing free versions of Speechify and an Android reader, noting at least $10 a month is normally needed to pay for such apps. Another post names the yearly cost without complaint, and one user simply decides it is time to pay.
On text, one user says Greek words have to be spelled out while Hebrew is pronounced perfectly, and another found technical and chemical books, especially ones with equations and depth, not covered well enough, naming YouLearn as no better. A developer spent four hours tracking down why dictation was inserted incorrectly on macOS, saying the app does not use the standard way text input is inserted.

Speechify has to spell out Greek words but can pronounce Hebrew perfectly.
@SpeechifyAI tell your devs to do things correctly, i spent a good 4 hours tracking down why your app didnt work. the reason, if fails to use the standard way dictation is inserted on macos. Speechify does not use `NSTextInputClient` or accessibility to insert text.
فروحت لحاجات تانية زي Speechify و YouLearn وغيرهم، وبردو فيهم تفاصيل كتير معجبتنيش خصوصا في الـ technical & chemical books والحاجات اللي فيها depth ومعادلات، ملقتش اللي انا محتاجه.

What are the alternatives to Speechify?
The largest group here is the 2 people who build or use a free text-to-speech setup instead of paying; the other three name a different app once each — ChatGPT, the reader Imogen, and Slurp.
Both free-setup posts start from the price. One paid $129 a year, lost their job, decided text to speech is easy to build and made a free version; the other says at least $10 a month is normally needed for this kind of app and is preparing free versions of Speechify and an Android speed reader.
The remaining three are single names. A former subscriber says they paid $20 a month a few years ago until ChatGPT came out, with no further explanation. One post is a bare pairing of Speechify and Imogen with nothing around it. The third announces cancelling both Readwise Reader and Speechify subscriptions now that Slurp has shipped for Mac, iPhone, Safari and Chrome.
So the comparison set is small reading apps and people's own builds. Nobody here describes trying one of these and going back to Speechify.

What do people want from Speechify?
One person describes a use they want: listening to a translated text while following the original. Nothing else on the page is filed as a wish, so this is one request, not a pattern.
The plan is to scan a book a chapter at a time on a phone, run the chapter through a translation app — Google Translate or DeepL, the latter noted for its reputation on German — then upload the translated text to Speechify and listen to it while trying to follow along in the original German. The post sets this out as an intention, so it does not say whether the upload worked or how the two versions lined up.
That is the whole of what people ask for here: no second post requests a feature, so there is no way to say whether others want the same thing or something different.
