goodbye supabase, hi @neondatabase and your 100 free projects 🙌
Neon on X
Praise for Neon's Realtime and branching is the biggest strand, with a wave of people arriving from Supabase for its free project count. The pushback is about bills arriving higher than expected and the 1GB free storage cap.

How do people feel about Neon?
Most of the 48 people posting about Neon are positive: 36 praise it, and 5 describe switching to it. Behind that, 6 are disappointed and 4 have not committed.
The praise is specific. Realtime, which keeps a SQL query live inside Postgres, is called powerful and simple enough that an agent can use it; branches are named as a favourite feature, spun up for a migration and tossed after; the free tier and the free project count come up; one reports about $20 a month for three Laravel apps with the database on the free tier.
Dissatisfaction is about money and limits. A user writes that they keep getting charged $200 a month "for zero reason" with emails asking to cancel unanswered; another says bills "can spike unexpectedly" and would not recommend it; the 1GB free storage cap is named. One doubts Realtime's approach of putting workflow data in Postgres hot storage rather than S3, and one asks whether Neon holds the record for the longest downtime.
The switchers give pricing, constant new features and a friend's recommendation. The undecided had not heard of Neon, bookmarked it for a next project, or are waiting on reports from people using it.

Any SQL query, reactively kept up to date on front end. And is so so simple to use, even and agent can do it! -- Six years ago I was building an app, and thought "wouldn't it be so much easer if we could just subscribe to a query on the front end". That started my journey through Local First, lead to joining @ElectricSQL, where we built multiple Sync Engines, PGlite and @tan_stack DB. We finally achieved that goal with @neondatabase Realtime. Perfect thing for a side project, give it a go! link
yes. i made this switch a few months ago. @neondatabase is awesome. better pricing and they are constantly innovating. when i need a cloud DB, this is my first choice right now.
Thanks Andre. Spinning up a test branch for a migration and tossing it after is so easy. Will send feedback if anything comes up.
@neondatabase is the worst company of all time I've emailed them countless times telling them I want to cancel my account with zero response. The negligence is beyond egregious and I keep getting charged $200/mo for zero reason

What do people complain about with Neon?
Billing and limits leads the complaints (4 of the section's 11 people), with bills arriving higher than expected and a tight free storage cap. Breakage follows, then migration work and pieces Neon is missing, which are level at 2 people each.
The money complaints are concrete. One user reports $200 a month charged for an account they have asked repeatedly to cancel, with no reply; another says bills "can spike unexpectedly"; a third warns that expiring free credits lower today's bill while hiding what the same usage costs later. The 1GB free storage cap is named as a limit.
Breakage is small in numbers and varied: Realtime in beta enabled in the Neon dashboard but not showing true in Vercel, with no environment variable written; a Terraform provider whose latest version is older than the one already in use; pull-request previews failing because the Vercel integration writes the database URLs but not the AWS storage variables.
Migration friction is summed up as "the annoying part", and one person expects to redo a lot of code. On capability, a partner says Neon does not support Tokyo yet, and one team says it cannot build what it wants because Neon lacks the way to do it.

@neondatabase bills can spike unexpectedly. not recommend it, sorry 😅
the expiry dates deserve a line in that runway calculation. free credits can lower today's bill while hiding what the same usage costs later
@neondatabase /@vercel_support it appears there is a problem with the neon connection, when enabling realtime (beta) it does not show as true in vercel, nor make an environment variable. It is, however, enabled in neon dashboard.
Hey @neondatabase team can y'all update the @vercel integration to also write the AWS variables for storage? I am tired of my PR previews failing due to this env var not being present. Currently only DATABASE_URL and DATABASE_URL_UNPOOLED are added to env vars.

What are the alternatives to Neon?
Supabase is the comparison the largest group makes (8 of the section's 17 people), over price, project limits and pausing. PlanetScale and self-hosted Postgres come next, level at 3 people each.
People weigh Neon against Supabase as a place to move to or from. Those moving to Neon cite its free project count, weekly pausing and a two-project ceiling on Supabase's side, and price: one says Neon is much cheaper if you run multiple projects, while another says cost is almost the same and points to scale-to-zero and startup credits. One presents Neon's per-customer database as a smaller blast radius if data is breached, calling that risk Supabase's.
PlanetScale is named instead of Neon, in one case for anything "real". Self-hosted Postgres on Hetzner or your own box is offered as the cheaper, more controllable route; the person weighing it says they are building solo and would rather not manage backups, upgrades and recovery.
Single voices name Cloudflare D1, Convex, and managed auth services, which one person finds all about equally fine. One migrated to Neon specifically for ElectricSQL.

- PlanetScale3
- Self-hosted Postgres3
- Cloudflare D11
- Convex1

goodbye supabase, hi @neondatabase and your 100 free projects 🙌
Oh, awesome that you switched! Hey @BertrandDiouly ! Neon is much cheaper if you run multiple projects. I was on Supabase for a year and then switched. So far I can only say positive things about Neon.
Neon has scale to zero options so that we don't get charged during idle time. It's optional. Also they have startup credits (they will review and approve manually). Both supabase and neon use postgres, so migration is possible. Cost wise, it's almost same. We use neon :)
Just use Planetscale if your building anything real
will give you one even better, get yourself a hetzner. host your own postgres and other cool shit!

What do people ask about Neon?
How to move to Neon is the largest group of questions (7 of the section's 28 people), then how it compares with Supabase (5). Cost (4) and whether the 100 free projects are real (3) follow.
The move questions are practical: is it really worth switching and how does the switch go, is there a strategy, skill or bot to migrate with, what would make switching easier — a skill, a CLI command or better docs — and how much friction there will be moving RLS policies and Auth, including those using auth.uid(). One asks simply whether Supabase to Neon can be done, and one asks what specific issues to know about first.
The comparison questions want a price comparison with Supabase, whether Neon is similar or completely different, and in what ways it is better. Cost questions cover object storage billed at the same rate or extra, egress limits, and how storage adds up across projects; one person reads the offer as "100 * 1 GB, 100GB of storage?" and one asks how to get the startup credits.
Smaller threads ask what Realtime is and how long it stays in beta, whether Neon Auth with TanStack Start is coming, who resolves a person and an agent editing the same record, and what the developer experience is like beyond the project count. One person asks how to run migrations when the staging branch is ahead of production.

never heard of it, any good / cheaper than supabase? easy switch? been with them for a couple of years but its getting pricey
neon offers 100 free projects??? 👀 it was 5 iirc
Is it really worth switching? How’s the switching experience?
Any strategy / skill / bot to migrate to them?
I'd never heard of Neon. Curious how much friction there will be with transitioning RLS and Auth - not sure if you have any RLS policies using auth.uid(), etc. Look forward to your findings. 👍

What do people want from Neon?
No single request is made by more than 2 people. The largest is a way to build something Neon does not support yet; everything else is one person's ask.
Two people want a capability Neon does not have so they can build what they have in mind; one of them says they have put in a feature request, and the other says they would build it if Neon had the way.
The rest are single asks, each concrete. One admirer of branching wants database-level copy-on-write branches per tenant, without cloning the whole database each time. One wants a student discount or free premium access, and one asks why there is no X sign-in among the social auth methods.
Two requests are about the Vercel and agent side: write the AWS storage variables in the Vercel integration so pull-request previews stop failing on a missing environment variable, and build a demo where a person edits a record while an agent is working from its old value, showing the conflict and the agent rebasing its change. One asks what Neon could do to make loading data in easier.
- A way to build what we need3
- Per-tenant copy-on-write branches1
- Student discount1
- X (Twitter) sign-in1
- AWS variables in the Vercel integration1
- A demo of human/agent edit conflicts1

@neondatabase, their branching is my favorite. But, If they could get database level copy-on-write branches for individual tenants, without cloning the entire database each time that would be so cool.
Hey @neondatabase team can y'all update the @vercel integration to also write the AWS variables for storage? I am tired of my PR previews failing due to this env var not being present. Currently only DATABASE_URL and DATABASE_URL_UNPOOLED are added to env vars.
The interesting collaboration case is a person editing a record while an agent is still working from its old value. A demo that exposes the conflict and lets the agent rebase its proposed change would show more than just both clients receiving live updates.
@neondatabase what do you think of a student discount or free premium access
@neondatabase why u dont have X social auth method?
