How do people feel about Convex?

Most of the 34 people posting about Convex praise it without qualification — 29 people — for being easy to build on, the backend they keep, and something they recommend. 4 fans keep using it with a reservation, and 2 say they tried it and were not convinced.

Fans describe it as a whole backend in one place: reactive queries, automatic caching and invalidation, transactional mutations, type-safe code end to end, background jobs and file storage. One calls Convex components a "game changer", another says it is the backend to keep after going public, and a founder credits it for keeping a product free to run. Setup and the new CLI draw praise for being easy and fun.

The reservations are practical: the schema tab is "kinda useless for bigger projects", a company that has used Convex for two years says the learning curve was steep until the team understood how it works differently, and one user warns an app will scale badly or cost more than it should if you are not careful. One fan says a rival is shipping faster.

The unconvinced view is a single thread: the tradeoffs against running SQLite locally did not add up, and the local binary's performance and size are poor.

My dad got his first claude code subscription he's vibe coding now, passed me in token spending He even asked me what @convex was, and wondered if I could learn it and build random things with it I didn't tell him I've been using it for over two years

That is why you use @convex that handle connection pools, reactive queries, automatic caching and invalidation, transactional mutations, type safe end to end, backend api layer, authorizaton logic, pagination, background jobs and scheduled functions, file storage, database migration, optimistic updates, concurrent updates, http actions, Everything unified NEED I SAY MORE?

What do people complain about with Convex?

The complaints are scattered across small groups: AI models' weak Convex knowledge at high cost, and dashboard and tooling bugs, are level at 3 people each, ahead of slow support and GitHub-login lockouts, also level at 2 people each. 1 user worries about cost and scaling.

The benchmark post on AI models travelled furthest: one user found a new model about as knowledgeable about Convex as a cheap one at 43 times the cost, and others repeated the cost gibe; the same user later called another model "meh" at Convex. Bug reports are specific: false "document not found" warnings for records that are in the table, deploy overrides that push to the old URL and 404, and useQuery errors blanking a whole screen, which one user worked around with a fails-soft hook.

Support complaints are about waiting: four days with no reply, a stuck automated reply, an unanswered GitHub issue, and a note that Convex still does not work well in a monorepo with several instances. Two users lost access through GitHub, one after a login was flagged and one when OAuth stopped working. The cost worry is a warning to be careful about scaling, plus a user slightly concerned but staying for the convenience.

  • AI models weak at Convex, and dear5
  • Dashboard and tooling bugs3
  • Slow support3
  • Locked out via GitHub login2
  • Cost and scaling worries2

@convex Hey, I'm seeing some weird issues currently in the dashboard of a project in prod. - Created about 40 records - Exported the created records - Reference the just created record _ids in another creation but get numerous warnings that the ids doesnt exist even though they are right there in the table. Doesn't prevent me from creation but even after insertion of the new records their referenced parentIds still say document not found. Have retried twice with the same result

Hey @convex not sure if you know this.. but setting CONVEX_CLOUD_URL and CONVEX_SITE_URL when deploying, pushes to the original url and not the updated urls ( even after updating the canonical url using the api ) was forced to just use the default urls because of 404s.

What are the alternatives to Convex?

The biggest comparison group is 2 people weighing Convex against just running SQLite locally. Every rival beyond that is named by 1 person or fewer, usually as a reason to pick Convex rather than a switch away from it.

The SQLite thread is the only comparison with more than one voice: a user wanted Convex to make sense but found "the tradeoffs vs just running local sqlite didn't make a ton of sense", judged the local binary's performance and size rough, and allowed it might work as cloud sync. The person they were talking to agreed it may not suit the case and said they would tinker slowly.

The rest are one-offs. Neon and ElectricSQL come up in a sync-engines discussion where a user calls Convex the most popular sync engine right now, and someone argues Convex is the better pick over Neon and is asked why. A user fully moved to Cloudflare D1 keeps Convex as the option for anything "way more serious". One asks whether Convex could do practically anything Airtable does. One wants Convex's LLM inference weighed against OpenRouter or OpenAI under contract. One says they happily pay for Convex rather than run or vibecode it themselves, and a fan says a rival is outshipping it.

  • Just running SQLite locally5
  • Neon2
  • Supabase1
  • Cloudflare D11
  • Airtable1
  • Running AI inference elsewhere1

What do people ask about Convex?

5 people ask what getting started is like and 4 ask how secure it is, level as the biggest groups. The rest are a long tail: recovering a locked account, file storage with other providers, what beats the alternatives, games, and how to structure a schema.

Getting-started questions are about the first hour: which of app, database and sign-in took longest to understand, whether reading the docs or copying the prompt gets you to a first working component faster, and what besides API keys felt confusing. One user says setup was "super easy to use and set up", and someone asks whether the team checks what Claude and Codex answer when asked about Convex, calling that part of the funnel.

Security questions follow a post about short-lived keys: are five-minute keys scoped, per agent or per task; can secrets be marked non-copyable; how is database security handled around these cases; and whether the managed runtime, still reporting Node 24.21.0, is patched against current vulnerabilities.

Beyond those: two people ask how to recover an account after GitHub login fails, two ask whether file storage works with other providers (one answers it is Convex-only for now, extendable through customMutations in convex-helpers), two ask what Convex does that others cannot, two ask about sandboxes and MCP (a team member replies both have been there for months), two discuss games, two ask about splitting a schema into components, and one asks about a size cap in mutations versus actions.

  • What's getting started like?5
  • Is it secure?5
  • How do I recover my account?2
  • Does file storage work with other providers?2
  • What makes it better than the alternatives?2
  • Are sandboxes and MCP already there?2

Oh no! 😂 sorry to hear that. Would love to hear your thoughts as you went through this the first time. Aside from API keys, is there anything else that felt confusing that we could improve on?

Short expiry fixes the key sitting in a repo. It does nothing if the thing minting them is what got owned, which is where the agent harnesses are heading. Do you scope what each 5 minute key can reach as well?

What do people want from Convex?

The largest ask is 2 people wanting agent sandboxes and auto-MCP. Everything else is one person's wish: a Mumbai or Asian region, native Flutter, Windows, key revocation and usage alerts, and assorted components.

The sandbox ask comes with a comparison: one fan says a rival is "way outdoing you guys lately with their releases" and asks when sandboxes and auto-MCP are coming, and another calls sandboxes for agents the missing piece, thinking about tool isolation without a full VM per call. A team member replied that several sandboxes and an MCP server already exist and have for months, so the ask is partly about people not knowing.

The single asks are concrete. A user wants a Mumbai region because even hobby projects have to choose the US. A developer who builds on Convex notes native support for React and React Native but not Flutter. Someone asks when Windows. A user of the AI docs chat likes the per-message copy button and wants one for the whole conversation. One wants fast key revocation and usage alerts because short expiry is not enough when a key leaks. Two are component ideas: a databuddy component so .track() works beyond buttons, and sub-components that each serve their own admin UI.

  • Agent sandboxes and auto-MCP2
  • A region near me (Mumbai, Asia)1
  • Native Flutter support1
  • Windows support1
  • Copy button for the whole AI chat1
  • Fast revocation and usage alerts for keys1
